Thoughts on second hand swimwear

I'm a big vinted fan and buy most of my clothes from there, I've bought swimwear that have the tags still on but wondered what people's thoughts were buying used/worn swimwear? I'm not sure how I feel about it!

Nope

Absolutely not

It's no different to second hand knickers

Flopsy145 · 19/03/2024 10:30

Ok good this was also my thinking, but there must be plenty of people who buy it so I was wondering if I was just overthinking!

Nope.

I have sold swimwear on Vinted though so somewhat hypocritical.

CharlotteBog · 19/03/2024 10:33

If it's only been worn a couple of times then I think it would be fine.
It's not like underwear, unless you spend your days sitting in weak bleach.

Cauliflowery · 19/03/2024 11:38

I would and I have! I would assume it's washed (unwashed swimwear probably has a very different market 🤮) and I would send back if it wasn't washed.

Probably wouldn't with pants cos they're less substantial material and worn far longer and more often.

It's just bodies and detergent works. I try not to overthink it, otherwise I'd be swerving items being held up by over-long nail extensions which I always assume have their own ecosystem hiding beneath.

Mairzydotes · 19/03/2024 20:43

I bought some for my daughter because it was out of season, and I struggled to find low cost swimwear for her.

itsgettingweird · 19/03/2024 21:15

Haven't ever done it myself.

But swimmers always wear second hand or lend each other trunks at training etc.

Tags on certainly wouldn't bother me.

Washed would be fine but for fashion swim wear I'd be worried about quality.

For actual training gear it saves a fortune!

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 19/03/2024 21:19

A bit of detergent is surely gonna remove any nasties??

Confuzzleduzzled · 19/03/2024 21:21

I’ve bought secondhand swimwear on vinted. I think it was worn once. I gave it a good wash but it would have been £80 new so I was just happy to have saved £65.

ObliviousCoalmine · 19/03/2024 21:29

Yes I'd buy swimwear from Vinted. Don't really see the issue.

snowlady4 · 19/03/2024 21:33

Id be fine with it

WhatWouldYouDo25 · 19/03/2024 21:34

I have bought swimwear on Vinted for my kids but was a bit hesitant to buy it for myself 😬

MirandaWest · 19/03/2024 21:35

I bought a used maternity swimming costume on eBay

Flopsy145 · 19/03/2024 21:52

@MirandaWest it's the maternity stuff I'm looking for, probably going to need it 3/4 times and don't want to spend £30 odd on something.

I bought second hand maternity swimwear in a second hand maternity wear shop. I put it through the wash with colour safe bleach and always wore it in a swimming pool.

My DCs' school has school-issued swimsuits (speedo style) and washes/ sanitises the suits daily. You dont know who wore your suit the previous day. Swim/ water polo/ diving team members get their own suits but these are returned at the end of the season.

I'm not sure I'd buy a second-hand suit online all the same. Photos don't always reveal the amount of wear and tear an item has seen.

Dorsetlover · 19/03/2024 22:33

I'd wash in dettol laundry wash.

StarlightLady · 20/03/2024 06:26

I’ve never thought about this one before. I think l’d want to out it through a very hot wash, which probably wouldn’t do it any good anyone.

On the counter side though, you sleep in sheets in hotels that have seen countless users and washed.

My other concern would be that people sell things for a reason and one of those may be that the stretch has gone. I had a lovely cossie that totally lost it’s shape so l binned it. Others may not have done the same thing.
