Tips for totes and laptops

I love a tote bag for work and commuting but struggle with how heavy they get with laptop, water and misc gubbins. What kind of tote bag works best for this? Is it all in the strap width? Or should I give up and resort to my (practical, ugly) backpacks?

For ref, I've tried out Knomo and Cos leather bags with no luck.

Longchamps Le Pliage has been my go-to for years. Apparently they are back in fashion now.
Roomy, light, packs down when not needed, shower proof, pretty indestructible.

A wide strap is more comfortable but doesn't reduce the weight on one shoulder. It's either a rucksack or split the weight into two bags, people often have a separate laptop bag.

Another vote for Longchamp Le Pliage - they’re such a classic, super easy to style and never go out of fashion. Can hold a huge amount and still be pretty comfortable to carry - DD used hers all throughout school and now uni carrying heavy books, laptop etc with no issues.

Top tip though is to go for one in a darker colour as the lighter ones can stain really easily and show their age far quicker
