what to wear with black dress to de-funeral it?

I bought this dress from La Redoute in May last year for a close family member's funeral. I really liked wearing it as it was flattering and SO comfortable. I am self-employed and don't usually have any occasions where I need to be smart or wear "office clothes" but when I do, I'd like to give the dress another outing. Don't really want to wear it as I did at the funeral with black shoes, black tights and a black jacket as it would look very funereal and it would just remind me of the day. Have googled and the first result suggested a canary yellow jacket which was a bit 😖 - I'm not a 25 year old contestant on the Apprentice, I'm in my 50s and a size 12-14.

Any suggestions??

I wear a similar dress with a boxy grey tweed blazer and boots. For more casual I'd put a black and white Nordic cardie over it.

Definitely no jacket: too fussy with that style. Jewellery and shoes are the way to go.

I have a posh bright pink cardigan that I wear with a black dress for work similar to that

It's a lovely dress btw!

If the dress is flattering I wouldn’t want to cover it up with a jacket or cardigan, unless it’s cold or you have a meeting.

It’s not funereal, I would wear it with some knee high low heel boots (cream if you have them).

Groovy coloured tights ☺️

You could wear more casually with a denim jacket, white trainers and statement earrings? or a colourful cardigan or tights?

Push up the sleeves

I love cream and tan with black. I'd buy a cream linen blazer that is fitted at the waist, sleeves pushed up a bit to echo the length of the dress sleeves, tan heeled sandals and some chunky turquoise or amber jewellery.

Don't think of wearing anything primary coloured or fuchsia pink with it unless you want to look like a 1980s throwback. It's a lovely dress, nude tights, chunky jewellery, camel accessories.

I don’t think it’s a dress that screams “funeral!” I think that’s just your association because you bought it for one. Really, I think it’s fine as it is.

Revelatio · 18/03/2024 17:10

I wear black dresses all the time, often with black tights and black shoes - I’ve never considered I might look like I was going to a funeral!!

Misthios · 18/03/2024 18:45

To be fair @mydamnfootstuckinthedoor as a woman in my early 50s I am definitely an 80s throwback.

And agree that it's the association I have made for the dress as it was bought for that specific occasion and unlike what I usually wear. I just need to break the association.

I'm a 90s girl, but I love a bit of 80s throwback - it reminds me of my older sisters back in the day!

You just have to go with what makes you comfortable and a style that you can picture on yourself. There have been some great ideas here, any of them will work, but it has to appeal to you. If you feel happy you'll look great.

A thin kimono type jacket to wear open - short length. Make sure there is some black in the print or even some embroidery on it.

If you like scarfs a colourful one in your favourites colours would look good with the dress and in a soft fabric feel comforting
