How to stop my hair looking like an unstuffed mattress when it’s tied up.

My hair is long and very straight.
When I tie it up it just looks all wispy and straggly, not the pony tail, the bit against my head.
Is there anything I can use? I never use any hairspray or any products at all. I just want something to make it all shiny and smooth.
