Modern clothes that fit!

Hello mumsnet. I am a 5ft woman (fashion/textile designer and art teacher) who is so tired of not being able to get stylish modern clothes that fit! I love clothes like Toast and Cos and I am thinking of starting a clothing business of made to measure high quality and sustainable cool clothes for all occasions. I have designed some clothes, had them made and I am really pleased with the products. Everything fits like a glove! Do you think there is a market for this? Would love to have your thoughts? Prices would be £110 to £140 and would take 28 days from ordering to delivery. I am thinking Etsy to begin with. Thanks all x

There are shops like this on Etsy. I've bought some linen tops. The Etsy ones all seem to be Vietnam/India.

I wouldn't expect to sell loads and loads though - what's stylish to you may not have such a huge market, unless you allow lots of customisation to the style.

Personally I like to feel comfortable rather than fits like a glove so you maybe selling yourself out of more body conscious ladies, a little give may result in less returns. 28 days is along time to wait for such expensive items. You could have a basic range and more expensive and a video if the model wearing the clothes to help boost sales.

28 days is along time to wait for such expensive items. Not really if they're made to measure!

I can read but it's still along time compared to the competition

I'd certainly think about buying from you if I like the clothes and if you could tailor them to my height and shape. The price point would be fine. Depending on where you live you could offer additional alterations or a measurement session for an additional price to ensure the fit is right.

Blacknailer · 10/03/2024 15:31

For the more popular styles you could always have some ready to send out in the most common sizes.

I'm sure you can. What I'm saying is that this time is IME standard for such items. It would be very long for standard sizing, which would be pre-produced. The timing for the two shouldn't be compared, since they're different production models. It's not a long time compared to OP's competition, which would be other made-to-measure places. It's true that both groups fall into items of clothing (say, shirts), but someone who is easily satisfied by the sizing in off-the-rack shirts without alterations, because the typical cuts happen to fit well on their body measurements, is not likely to be buying made to measure tops unless specifically for a pattern or cut.

I'm not sure why you keep replying to me @Precipice it's irrelevant, I'm giving MY opinion

I'd buy clothes this way.

Cauliflowery · 10/03/2024 16:33

I'd buy clothes which were tailored to my shape yes. I'd actually really like the basics redone for me. Tracksuit trousers, fitted t-shirts etc

But I'm 5 foot 8 hourglass with a really high up waist, so what I'm after is almost definitely not what you're after!

I'd be looking for being able to specify exactly how high the rise is ( "high rise " is rarely high on me, it is so, so hard to find trousers that fit).

Would you be looking to tailor for various body shapes or just concerns closer to your own (I'd understand if the latter, if often dream of designing clothes for my precise shape only!).

Me too! I'm curvy 5'8" with a really low waist/long back. Waistlines/bust are always in the wrong place for me. Trousers rarely cover my knickers unless they are "high waist" = natural waist, but this messes up all the curves.

Old Town do something similar.
Very Toast style.
