Wedding guest dress needed for Scottish wedding. 1950's swing?

Hello, you lovely lot. I'm attending a wedding for Scottish relatives in July and fancy getting myself a tartan 1950's Swing Dress for the day.

I've seen one on Pretty Kitty but I was wondering if any of you had any other good recommendations of sites I should try.

My DH and I got married in Scotland some years ago and our wedding cake topper was him in his uniform and me in a dark green and dark blue tartan dress so thought it would be nice to actually wear it for this. Thanks in advance!

I saw this one the other day but out of stock in my size 😏

Tartan too much? Should I go a different colour?

I have that dress and adore it. I also had a net skirt for underneath which I wore to a wedding.

BrotherUrgh · 09/03/2024 13:09

British Retro and Collectif have loads of 50s style tartan dresses.

@Wheresthescissors yeah I was worried about that 🤔

The wedding venue isn't a church wedding and quite dark but with lots of fairy lights so I might get away with it.

That dress is gorgeous. The only thing I would suggest if you're going for Tartan is check with the couple that no tartans are off limits. The men from my dad's side all wore Rangers Tartan to my wedding. One of my husband's well-meaning English friends wore a green Tartan (Celtic). I didn't bother me, but my dad & uncles were less than impressed.

Wheresthescissors · 09/03/2024 17:44

Why tartan though?

The pretty Kitty one

IF, IF, IF it matters, the Black Watch tartan - which those dresses are loosely based on - is a British ARMY tartan. The Black Watch was recruited from Highlanders (they knew the wild countryside and could work well in it) who were loyal to the Crown in London after the romantic but doomed 1715 Jacobite rebellions. The Black Watch much later became famous for bravery (and suffering terrible slaughter) in the 1914-1918 War.

So if you want to go all romantic and Outlander-ish, it might not be the best choice. Or even if you want to respect the awful suffering of WW1 soldiers.

Most tartans as we know them today are 19th cent inventions. But they still have resonances, as - apart from this - the poster who mentioned tartam worn by Rangers fans (and others) so clearly demonstrates.

Are you Scottish? If not I’d think you were “dressing up” for a Scottish wedding.

Michellebops · 09/03/2024 18:47

I'm Scottish and whilst I probably wouldn't wear tartan to a wedding here I absolutely love the 2 dresses you posted and don't think they would look out of place.
Hope you find something you love

Itsmeamandaberry · 09/03/2024 18:48

Please don't cos play and wear tartan. Only men wear tartan to a wedding if wearing a kilt or trews.

Also it's far too dark for a July wedding.

I agree with this. I’m Scottish and I don’t think I’ve ever been to a wedding where anyone except the men wear tartan. I also agree with @nameXname The dress is lovely but a bit too ‘try hard’ for me.

This. I'm Scottish and I'd be wondering if the see you Jimmy hat would be making an appearance. The dress is gorgeous but I just think it's a little strange.

GreyBlackLove · 09/03/2024 19:06

I've been to a few weddings where women have worn tartan, but it's not common as other posters above indicated. I'd agree that the colours are dark for the time of year so while the silhouette is nice you might want to consider something brighter.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 09/03/2024 19:13

I'm scottish and I say go for it- it's just a pattern at the end of the day!

What about a non Scottish wedding? Not that I give a shiny shite and will fully wear whatever I like at all times but I’m
curious

It's not though. Tartan isn't just a pattern it's an important part of our dress!

Itsmeamandaberry · 09/03/2024 21:12

@MsAnnFrope it's been made clear that 99% of the time men wear tartan to weddings. Why would you want to ?
