What outdoor temperature is it acceptable to wear a beanie?

Strange question I know. I have hairloss and wear wigs which are extremely expensive - talking at least £1000 plus styling and colouring for a decent one, and they only last around a year.

I'm trying to stretch this to every other year by wearing cheap ones with hats when out and about. the cheap ones look realistic only with hats covering the hairline. Easy enough in the winter, but as the weather is getting warmer, I am worrying about looking silly. Like those men who wear beanies with t-shirts.

Google tells me it's okay at under 16 degrees but to me that seems far too warm for beanies / beret type hats. I don't suit other hats at all.

I guess it matters if it is sunny too.

Any thoughts?

Winter hat imo. Anything over 13/14 or sunny would look a bit odd. And I live in a pretty hipster place! I'd go cap over those temperatures

GettingStuffed · 06/03/2024 21:50

If you want to wear a hat how about a baseball cap wig or a hair band one. You can get loads on Amazon or if you don't mind it Temu do loads and they've looked good when I've seen them worn

Whiskersoff · 06/03/2024 21:54

What about a turban/headwrap type thing over the wig? Or just a bandeau wrap to cover the hairline? Basically the same coverage but a lighter fabric.

Though if you're not too hot and uncomfortable in the beanie, just wear that - nobody will really notice or care unless it's a blazing hot day. (It made me laugh thinking of where Google got this 16 degree rule from! Can you imagine someone standing there with a thermometer acting like the beanie police?)

Would a buff be any use?

EasterMummie · 06/03/2024 21:57

I think it also depends on how windy it is, as that sometimes makes it feel cooler.

Could you get into baseball caps, or a straw sun hat on some days?

I had no idea good wigs costed that/only last around a year, what a pain.

DevaleraSpawnOfSatan · 06/03/2024 22:01

You do you, you have enough on your mind without worrying what other people think.

soupofpasta · 06/03/2024 22:02

@legalseagull Thanks. I was thinking myself 13/14 or sunny as a cut off. I like to have rules for things, to cut indecisiveness in the morning. haha.

@GettingStuffed Thanks. I can wear the cheaper wigs with normal baseball caps as well, and sometimes do in summer, but I've been on the hunt for one which doesn't look silly at my age and colouring, and haven't found one yet. I have bought and returned so many!

@Whiskersoff Thanks. I also wear headbands wigs in summer, but they don't look right on me either. I have a 'sharp' face and a certain wrinkle distribution that makes it look really bad if I have no 'hair' around my face. Re the beanie police - I know haha! I think it was aimed at men, but I do get some weird looks wearing it in the heat, looks like you are either trying to hide something, or hipster, and I'm too old to be a hipster!

@3beesinmybonnet Thanks. I do wear the buffs / headbands but they don't suit me at all.

@EasterMummie Yeah I think the wind matters too. I know, I had no idea until this happened to me. It's so expensive and I'm on a low wage. Also nerve-wracking spending all that money and wondering if it will even last the year or colour fade etc.

@DevaleraSpawnOfSatan I do worry though. I'm not vain, but I just want to somewhat blend in 😥😥

I agree with @DevaleraSpawnOfSatan you do you! You can get thinner type beanies ?

Or

Would a headscarf work? The ones that are tied and look a bit like a headband? A headband? A braided headband?

Luddite26 · 07/03/2024 05:17

I have really thin hair so have had to start wearing baseball caps in my 50s in the sun. I've found Superdry ones particularly comfortable. I don't know whether you have tried theirs.
I wouldn't look at someone and wonder why they are wearing a beanie in the summer though.

soupofpasta · 07/03/2024 13:39

@Allthebubbles44 Thanks, that scarf is beautiful. I'm really pale though but am looking at the website.

@Luddite26 Thank you. I will have a look at superdry. I bought a Nike kids one yesterday which I think looks ok.

Yes it must be nerve wracking spending money on one only to find it doesn't last or you don't like the look of.

I wonder if these guys would have some tips? I've often seen their videos pop up on my insta, they are in Australia but maybe have suggestions that might help.
