Anyone bought a suit from Theory?

I'm looking for another work suit and, after several months sweltering in pongy polyester, I'm looking for wool or other natural materials.

I have found some at Theory which fit the bill, but I have never encountered them before and was wondering if anyone had any experience before I take the plunge.

Thanks ladies!

Hard to say! I’ve been aware of them for at least twenty years - but as a brand they always seem quite astonishingly anonymous and characterless. I sometimes pass the clothes in Selfridges and just can’t discern any personality to them. I like good clothes but nothing has ever tempted me to buy from them. And they’ve never found a place in the more than 100 shops saved to my screen. Expensively dull, to put it briefly.

Toteme, Studio Nicholson, even some of MaxMara are in the same sort of range - with much more pizzazz about them. I realise Theory’s sort of ultra blandness is popular in the US - but it’s not for me.

I couldn’t really comment on their long term quality as I’ve never even tried anything on. There’s a fair bit of polyester crepe in their newest collection online - which I also find off-putting.

Thank you so much for your reply! Sadly their very blandness is what I’m looking for. I am in a conservative profession where the goal seems to be to be as anonymous as possible so I’m looking for very classic (kinder than bland 😂) well cut suits in natural fabrics and very sober colours. I will take a look at your suggestions for other shops. Much appreciated!

And yes, just because you call it “crepe” doesn’t make it any less sweaty and polyester!

Ah - bad luck! My former Very Serious Profession gave me complete freedom to spend my generous overdraft on wear fabulous black or grey suits from Jil Sander, Antonio Fusco, and the like. (I miss those days, for the clothes.) I always felt a need to compete with my male colleagues in their handmade Savile Row suits with bright red silk linings …

Toteme and Studio Nicholson will almost certainly be too fashion-y for the culture you’ve described. I’m trying to remember the name of a particular very conservative brand currently apparently popular with City women - often mentioned here. Someone else will know.

I have a cashmere/wool Theory coat and it is beautiful 😍

But that doesn’t tell us much, @Haver74

Why did you choose it - what distinguished it from any other similarly priced coat (new or pre-owned)?

Have you bought or are you considering buying anything else from Theory?

Which other brands would you compare them to and do you think they’re good value in terms of design, quality, longevity?

Gosh, I'm sorry I didn't write an essay on its comparative qualities! 😂
It's very well designed and made and is a trench coat style. It hangs beautifully and I Iove wearing it. I wear lot of Cefinn, Sezane, Maxmara and Joseph, but I often buy one off pieces from all sorts of brands if I like the look of them.

I used to have some Theory trousers years ago when they briefly had loads of their stuff in TKMaxx. They were nice quality and well cut. Bearing in mind that this was years ago so might not apply now: the sizing was ginormous in small sizes and tiny in big sizes. I think it was because the difference between sizes was quite small. I was a size 8 uk at the time and had to buy a us 0. Then massively offended my size 12-14 friend by telling her how humungous the Theory sizing was, only to find she couldn't squeeze into her normal size...
