What makes something/someone frumpy? It's hard to define. I know MN can get upset at this word.

Eh? You check people's age when you see them in a certain kind of coat?

Itsabouttimeformetogetonthefloor · 06/03/2024 22:35

Calf length skirts.
Cheap t shirts and tops from the supermarket.
Colours that don’t go together.
Shapeless jeans.
Non-branded trainers or pleather boots.
Walking gear for everyday, not when doing an actual hike.

I'm 60. My current coat is a vintage French Connection men's houndstooth (£6 in charity shop and really good quality).

Why hasn't it changed colour?

I have no idea. I'm 64 and have a lovely navy cashmere coat. Just checked - nope, not purple.

IClaudine · 06/03/2024 22:41

Calf length skirts

I don't like these as they are not flattering on me, but the shops are full of them. What are the alternatives?

Bitchy and ageist.
What colour should a 60 year old woman wear?

I have had my colours done and this colour absolutely suits me.

Itsabouttimeformetogetonthefloor · 06/03/2024 22:42

Oh and the absolute WORST is knee length denim shorts. Worn with a stripy supermarket t shirt of course, and unbranded trainers.

IClaudine · 06/03/2024 22:44

Sackcloth and ashes.

I have a bright pink balloon sleeved jumper from Oliver Bonas. I love it.

What's wrong with unbranded trainers?

I have never been able to understand people who are slaves to particular brands of trainers TBH. Just wear what you like the look of and what feels comfortable. Mine just happen to be Adidas because they are comfortable, not because they are branded.

lookwhatyoudidthere · 06/03/2024 22:58

Polyester midi large scale floral dresses. 🤮

Seaside3 · 06/03/2024 23:07

I didn't suggest all people over the age of 60 ish wear a maroon/purple coat. I just have seen the look on ladies around that age and it immediately ages them/looks frumpy. I have yet to see it on a younger lady.
In my opinion.
But, you know, if you libe a purple anorak, go for it. That's fine.

As it happens, I think frumpy is subjective. I look hello frumpy in something floral and flounce because I'm short, fat and middle aged. But someone who is taller, thinner and the same.age may well look amazing. The same tall, thinner lady will likely loom frumpy in other clothes.

Buy I stand by the coat being frumpy. In my eyes.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 06/03/2024 23:35

Toast clothes. Frumpy masquerading as fashionable.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 06/03/2024 23:51

I’m probably the epitome of frumpy for most people on here, but you know what? I wouldn’t be seen dead in most of the stuff that gets raved about.

62 and my coat is black vicuna from Hobbs. I last had a purple coat when I was 13.

Cydonia · 07/03/2024 00:16

I have a purple Craghoppers coat for dog walking. I got it because I wanted Goretex and it was heavily reduced. Do I need to put it away until I’m 60? Or can I still wear it over my Fat Face / Weird Fish / White Stuff / Supermarket tops, jeggings and ill fitting jeans??

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 07/03/2024 00:24

One thing that is particularly unpleasant in posters' designation of frumpy is when they are picking clothing from cheap shops eg supermarkets and specifying unbranded sportswear and trainers as being frumpy .

Given how short of money a lot of people are at the moment, no matter how much a person enjoys fashion they are never going to put their clothing preferences over paying bills .

Frumpy its a difficult one and I probably fall into that category age wise.

But its not really an age thing I don’t think as I have got older its a style/attitude thing. Think given up, old fashioned, making no effort librarian or someone who looks like they are about to bake a cake looking about as far off Nigella as you can imagine or splash in puddles.

I know someone who I would describe as this she is a lot younger than me and dresses like a little girl but in oversize pinafores or flared knee length skirts with coloured tights and either Mary Jane Shoes or coloured flat boots. She wears glasses has a non descript long bob that she has had forever and looks like she makes no effort with her hair, never wears make up and often wears a colourful mac or waterproof from Seasalt, Joules or Boden. She looks like she is about to splash in puddles, has made a cake and hasn’t washed or cleaned her clothes in forever.

Looking like you’re about to splash in puddles having made a cake sounds like life goals to me

108Anj · 05/03/2024 09:54

Yes, there is that aspect of it. It just seems a bit of a waste to have these physical attributes going unseen.

You think she should get her tits out to me more stylish??!

she sounds like she has her look to me

Rhaenys · 07/03/2024 01:38

Just me in general. 😂

changeme4this · 07/03/2024 03:02

I managed to be photographed in some holidays snaps last year, above knee/denim shirts and an over sized top. I think it looks terrible, but I see many women my age wearing it almost like a uniform for my age group….

CurlewKate · 07/03/2024 03:32

I think I might collate this thread and send it to my very stylish dd and dil. I haven't done enough to destroy their confidence recently....

If you're so offended why read? You've commented a few times now."

I keep popping back to see if people are still being so vacuous and vile. And snobbishly insecure- "unbranded trainers"🤣🤣 And misogynist. And ageist. Sadly, they are.

IloveAslan · 07/03/2024 05:05

or maybe I just need to find a local vicar to marry and be done with it

When I was a teen our vicar's wife was the talk of our small town for her short skirts Grin

Anything linen just looks a creased mess to me.

I would rather look a creased mess in linen than wander around in some ghastly man made fabric!
