What screams frumpy?

What makes something/someone frumpy? It's hard to define. I know MN can get upset at this word.

I am almost certainly frumpy.
I wear mostly black - comfortable trousers and t shirts and fleeces or jumpers. In summer, plain linen dresses.
Little or no make up, long white hair.
But who actually cares? I thought/hoped we were beyond all that.

Clearly not, or OP wouldn't have started this thread.🤷‍♀️
I see it as another way to shame, criticize and bully other women. It certainly isn't about lifting each other up.

True to an extent, but if you're wearing something v old fashioned (like a waterfall cardigan imo) as opposed to something classic, you're still going to look frumpy.

Another poster has given the best response to this:
What I don't like about it is the casual, smug rudeness. It's a meaningless overused word. It adds nothing.

For me frumpy is an outfit totally from one of the White Stuff/Joules/Seasalt type brands. Style is finding the ingredients and putting a look together for yourself. These days trying to look a bit too formal also comes across this way. Ultra frumpy to extreme is a Regatta fleece, baggy jersey trousers and plain ankle boots.

Crikey you would think me frumpy! But, knock yourself out, I really don't care, I like my look!

Safe clothes.
Floral dresses.
Skinny jeans with ankle boots.
Peplum tops.

I wear ankle boots with jeggings as does my work colleague and we are far from frumpy.

Me too, apart from I wear make up and have my hair coloured but it doesn't matter if you don't. We should dress and look as we want.

GettingStuffed · 05/03/2024 08:32

Ill fitting clothes, clashing colours or patterns. Shift dresses on people who are short and fat

@GettingStuffed may I ask if you are short and fat? I am, and it is an absolute nightmare finding anything that fits at all, never mind in a flattering, non frumpy way. The specific nature of your comment is rather odd.

4610J · 06/03/2024 20:32

Stop it with all floral dresses. Some can look lovely.

Is this a sarcastic or tongue in cheek comment? Because it's a universal understanding that jeggings are an abomination and in no way can be described in any way as stylish

Is your comment sarcastic or tongue in cheek or are you always this damning and judgemental about other women's clothes choices?

Please elaborate on what you think is stylish.

Sonolanona · 06/03/2024 21:02

I just looked at Cos and Arket... I'm presuming they are nicely made, given the cost but they really don't look any better than similar droopy baggy stuff in H+M!
I just like clothes that feel comfortable, (so cotton, linen especially tops) and that fit my lifestyle... which is centred around children (work) dogs, and my allotment... so today was Uniqlo leggings (the awesome ones with pockets that fit soooo well), uniqlo thermal layer, and a Crew clothing jumper . Topped attractively with a Mountain Warehouse rainproof jacket Grin
Perhaps at least redeemed by my Le Chameau wellies?!! Grin

shrugs Shapeless Coz sacks do nothing for me and don't fit my lifestyle. If that means I'm frumpy... I embrace my frumpiness!

TastyLikeARaindrop · 06/03/2024 21:11

I read in a magazine, probably 20+ years ago, that bright pink/fuschia is a frumpy colour so I have never worn it.

I recoil from 'embellished' clothes with beading, sequins, embroidery etc as I think they look frumpy. Most Christmas jumpers fall into that category.

Low cut tops on a large bust.

Animal print.

Massive dangly earrings.

Also overly styled 'helmet hair' and powdery foundation.

Think Beverly Goldberg.

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 06/03/2024 21:12

So these are all things that I have weeded out of my wardrobe because for me they felt frumpy..

  • leggings with long tunic tops
  • skinny jeans / jeggings with fitted jumpers
  • Boden type jersey print dresses, especially worn with neat little cardigans
I still wear the leggings with loose hoodies for around the house, running errands etc. Switched the skinnies for slim or straight leg jeans and wide leg cords with looser, less structured jumpers. Midi / midaxi length skirts with T-shirts or jumpers. Chunkier trainers rather than fitted styles and ballet pumps.

I read this and was thinking that she sounds really cool in style terms actually, but possibly in a way that the posted doesn’t recognise or understand

Edited

Yes agree, she sounds quirky and arty, I think the poster has given quite a lot of thought to this woman, so much detail in the description! A sort of admiration but can’t acknowledge why she admires it? I don’t get the cake thing though - what does looking like you’ve just made a cake mean? Cakes and puddles both sound quite childlike and fun, maybe she looks like she’s having more fun than everyone else who are probably more frumpy than her anyway.

Justnevergetsthere · 06/03/2024 21:18

Bootcut trousers/jeans, mom jeans - they don't suit anybody.
I'll fitting trousers - think chinos that have gone baggy at the knee and hips.
Hotter shoes.
Waterfall cardigans.
Walking gear, unless you're walking.
Most Seasalt tunics.
A lot of Monsoon.

Isometimeswonder · 06/03/2024 21:20

Why are women being so negative to other women?
Frumpy isn't used about men.
Can't we just let everyone be?

Pointofreference · 06/03/2024 21:27

Gilet-on anyone!
Black trainers with dresses.
Balloon sleeves.
Shirts/blouses with a tie up on the front.
Puffa jackets in bright colours unless on a really slim person.
Chelsea boots.

All the clothes in all shops at the moment.

Absolutely. They are like bin bags, or jumble sale shapeless. This is fine if you are a tall skinny minnie aged 17. And the colours!!!

RampantIvy · 06/03/2024 21:47

I agree. TBH I thought the bits I looked at looked rather (whispers) frumpy.

It is neither. I know a lot of women who wear jeggings/skinny jeans and are no way frumpy. I find your comment very rude and judgemental.

I agree. I have just replied to this post to say as much. This person is very rude and critical.

DetectiveDouche · 06/03/2024 22:03

Oh God I’m so frumpy. I wear tunics and leggings to work.. with ankle boots 👀 And at the weekends I wear skinny jeans and sweatshirts. Shoot me now because I don’t think I can change. To top it off, I’m menopausal and probably more than a bit fat (size 16). I’m a disaster

JaneJeffer · 06/03/2024 22:04

Walking gear, unless you're walking.
Don't stop to catch your breath, keep walking woman FFS otherwise you'll look frumpy

SpringLambForDinner · 06/03/2024 22:04

@TastyLikeARaindrop surely Christmas jumpers are supposed to be tacky/frumpy, I think it’s ok to wear a fun jumper to get into the festive spirit. Life would be so joyless if clothes had to be serious all the time.

JaneJeffer · 06/03/2024 22:07
