Savoy afternoon tea

Savoyafternoon · 02/03/2024 20:50

I am spending the day in London in a couple of weeks. Travelling in on the train. Then afternoon tea at the Savoy.
I am usually in jeans and trainers. Age over 50.
Any suggestions for something that’s comfy but smart enough?

I'm still puzzling a the suggestion of a £5000 cocktail, which makes every other post seem reasonable in comparison.

I'm sure you posted the Karen Millen ones. If not then of course I step back. I guess as it looked similar to your bland style then I immediately thought you were the same poster.

The thing is that ‘smart casual’ often implies ‘new and expensive’, and even if I thought trainers were suitable, I wouldn’t want to have spent the day in them walking through puddles.

Smart trainers tend to be leather, so not a problem if it rains.

Thank you all for your lovely suggestions. Some really great ideas for someone who was completely stumped and panicking a bit.

But it is such a shame that people are arguing. This may sound sad but this day out is actually my hen do. It’s just me and my sister in law who I absolutely adore. I am so looking forward to a lovely day spending more money than I probably should and eating and drinking lovely things. My partner and I have been together for 30 years so the whole wedding is ridiculously low key but I still want it to be all about nice memories.
So please quit the arguing if you could 😘every one of you has given me something to think about.
Except perhaps for the amazing sounding but ridiculously expensive drink 😁

How lovely! What a nice occasion. I'm sure that you'll have a good time, wear something that makes you feel good! Go easy on the cocktails 😊

TomatoketchupfromMandS · 04/03/2024 10:20

Not sad at all! How nice that you get on so well with your SIL. Have a wonderful time OP.

nc42day · 04/03/2024 10:21

Good on you OP, sounds like my kind of hen do - perfect!

I'd wear black silk shirt, black wide legged trousers, with flat boots. I'd have my hair done, red lipstick, a bold necklace or earrings or bangles, mac and bag, and in the bag I'd have a fine knit wool jumper and an oversized scarf.

That will take you everywhere you want to go in the day and the evening.

I think this probably nails it. Quite classic and with a fine knit scarf/jumper covers any changes in temperature.
some of the suggestions on here are so marmite.

Turkishcoffee · 04/03/2024 10:23

I wore trousers and a nice top. My friend wore a fancy pink dress but she said she felt out of place as most people were dressed smart casual in more muted colours. She looked lovely though!

HaveringGold · 04/03/2024 10:23

Fabulous occasion, and all the more reason to get a little bit dressed up. Enjoy and congratulations 🍸

StrongandNorthern · 04/03/2024 10:23

Ah that's brilliant! Have a fabulous time.

Floatinginvacherin · 04/03/2024 10:24

That sounds fabulous. And you definitely need to treat yourself to something lovely to wear. Buy yourself something you feel excellent in as an investment - unless you rock up in a ballgown, you’re unlikely to look out of place.

Turkishcoffee · 04/03/2024 10:25

I meant to add have a really wonderful day! It will be special no matter what you choose to wear 😊

If you're all overthought on this, Autograph M and S usually do a silk shirt, order a couple of sizes, see which you feel you like the fit of best, roll the sleeves up, get your nails done, hell splash out on a new pair of wide legs in a fabric you like, new bra and pants, and you're golden.

I sometimes joke that I dress like a scene shifter, as it's mostly black, but I can honestly say, I never feel out of place in what I'm wearing, or that I've got it wrong, and it's my trademark after so long, nobody expects me in a colour any more! Takes all the thinking out of it, which I'm all for. I just circle round the natural fibre basics and tweak my extras depending on how big the earrings/high the heels need to be. Works for me.

OneFrenchEgg · 04/03/2024 10:38

Dress code: please wear whatever makes you feel elegant and comfortable

^ elegant has different nuance to smart.

Op I would definitely get your nails done and your eyebrows threaded - mine are microbladed but I always feel so nice when I do some little upgrades to my usual look.

That’s the great thing about London, you can usually be under dressed or overdressed and no one will be bat an eyelid. People will look if you look good, not if you look bad.

Ophy83 · 04/03/2024 10:41

How about some new trousers that don't yet have an association with work (even if they go on to become work trousers!) along with a lovely silk blouse from Sezane or somewhere

Frumpitydoo · 04/03/2024 10:47

I think tea dresses should be mandatory at afternoon tea.
I'd look at LKBennet, Hobbs, Jigsaw, Whistles etc al and find a classic. Dressing up nicely is half of the fun!

Lentilweaver · 04/03/2024 10:47

One more suggestion before I go: Sezane has some pretty dresses. I actually do like colour and wear it a lot in London. I wear silk shirts but they tend to be in blues, emeralds or deep pink.

This with a jacket or blazer over the top? It's cotton and looks comfy. Pippa Dress - Rosewood - 0rganic cotton - textile made from organic fibers - Sézane (sezane.com)

Love a nice tea dress! Can't go wrong and if you want to go cheaper than Ebay/Vinted/charity shop are often good pickings for them.

Floatinginvacherin · 04/03/2024 09:20

Don’t people find the wearing nice things part of the fun? I rarely get the chance to justify much beyond jumper and jeans so an event where I can wear something a bit different is very welcome. I recently went to the theatre and wore a dress (Seasalt, shoot me) and it really added to my enjoyment of the day.

Seasalt is great ( shoot me too,I love a seasalt dress !) but it's not really dressing up,is it? I'd class that as a step up from every day wear and absolutely perfect. Dressing up to me is a wedding outfit which definitely isn't required for afternoon tea/ theatre.
