Savoy afternoon tea

Savoyafternoon · 02/03/2024 20:50

I am spending the day in London in a couple of weeks. Travelling in on the train. Then afternoon tea at the Savoy.
I am usually in jeans and trainers. Age over 50.
Any suggestions for something that’s comfy but smart enough?

Wide leg trousers?

Savoyafternoon · 03/03/2024 14:59

Thank you. Think that’s my only option. It’s what I wear for work though.

A nice but simple dress, tights, flats.
Seasalt or White Stuff?

DGPP · 03/03/2024 15:03

its posh, you need trousers and nice top or a dress. Nice jewellery. I wouldn’t wear jeans. It’s all gorgeous though

LlynTegid · 03/03/2024 16:50

I think what you wear for work is fine. Have a lovely time.

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 03/03/2024 17:53

Jeez … Are Seasalt and White Stuff honestly the best S&B can offer to someone wanting to dress up?

@Savoyafternoon what size are you and what is your budget? And - importantly - how do you want to look?

JMAngel1 · 03/03/2024 18:40

@BlossomBlossomBlossom
exactly what I was thinking.

Savoyafternoon · 03/03/2024 19:35

@BlossomBlossomBlossom 😂
I’m a 10-12. Budget not really thought about but for something I fall in love with probably up to £150.
I want to not look out of place but I have to be able to do all the walking that I want to on the same day so I have to be comfortable at the same time.

Ask for a Sazerac cocktail, it's to die for!

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 03/03/2024 21:19

Oh my! Was going to direct you to a cheaper but infinitely (imo) more stylish ivory knitted dress at & Other Stories - but was stopped in my tracks by this:

https://www.stories.com/engbp/clothing/blouses-shirts/blouses/product.cropped-floral-appliqué-blouse-white.1212800003.html

Spend your budget on this one piece and wear with a skirt or trousers and flat shoes you already have? It’s so elegant and Spring-like. (I have a white broderie anglaise blouse in a similar shape, years old from MSGM, that comes out every Spring and can take me anywhere.) This would go beautifully with jeans for the rest of the year, too.

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 03/03/2024 21:40

Entirely different, but if it were me, and I had or could borrow a lovely skirt, I’d be rather keen to pair it with a piece of La Fetiche knitwear. This is a work of art (an actual artist collaboration) and a bargain. To be worn with your nicest jewels.

https://www.lafetiche.com/shop/barbara-blue/

There may be one or two other things there that are vaguely within budget. They’re generous with sizing so come up quite large.

Perfection:

(Also worth browsing the rest of the Raey sale stock.)

Add your own trousers / skirt.

Don't wear a dress if it's not you, just avoid the tourist look.
I would do: thin jumper, maybe a polo neck, or a nice shirt, slightly long front-pleat trousers, belt, nice trainers (not white). A mac or a thin coat (no puffer coat) and a good bag, no backpack type of thing.
Some jewellery if you have it. Keep your clothes practical and understated, it's tea, not the baftas.
On the other hand, it's impossible to feel over-groomed so maybe hair done the day before, etc.

LaurieFairyCake · 03/03/2024 23:22

Your normal jeans and (nice) jumper is fine

I went to the Goring for Christmas afternoon tea and didn't dress up, most people weren't.

I live in London and most locals don't dress up ever

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 04/03/2024 05:20
Hmm

Nope …

Can’t even be bothered to respond …

leafybrew · 04/03/2024 05:32

Hehe - well I'm an over 50 and loved the Seasalt and White Stuff suggestions....

The cream blouse/shirt thing for lots of money ? And the fairisle jumper???

Both get a big nope - but sadly I'm not and never will be a follower of fashion.

It's good for the OP to have a variety of suggestions though!

therealcookiemonster · 04/03/2024 05:33

unicorn onesie

catch them off guard. they won't know if it's haute couture or whether you are off your rocker and won't say anything

DottyLS · 04/03/2024 05:43

I did Savoy afternoon tea recently and wore white trainers, cords. Nobody minded.
Dress up if you want to but there's no obligation

Weddingmom · 04/03/2024 05:58

No one will give a shit really London is very casual

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 04/03/2024 06:13

I’m considerably over 50, @leafybrew; the things I’ve suggested here are similar to those I already own and wear pretty much every day, depending on the season. I don’t really think of them as fashion’, at all - just clothes. 🤷‍♀️

SandyWaves · 04/03/2024 06:54

Jeans and a nice shirt.

True as other posters have said, London is casual. Over dressed people in the day look odd!
