Savoy afternoon tea

Savoyafternoon · 02/03/2024 20:50

I am spending the day in London in a couple of weeks. Travelling in on the train. Then afternoon tea at the Savoy.
I am usually in jeans and trainers. Age over 50.
Any suggestions for something that’s comfy but smart enough?

Aren't seasalt and White Stuff a bit scruffy? Or is upmarket afternoon tea now like the theatre in London and it's a contest to see who can seem the less bovvered by ŵearing the most depressing and dress down outfit?
Seems a shame to me.

mitogoshi · 04/03/2024 07:10

I liked the sea salt dress too, it certainly fits the brief of comfy but smart enough, I'd pair with leather boots myself as to me trainers are not smart ever.

The dress code is comfortable and elegant so wish washy at best. I would avoid jeans, sportswear/leggings, trainers, hiking boots/shoes myself

@heldinadream - perhaps you’d like to withdraw your post as you’ve clearly misunderstood something?

And no - expressing a lack of interest in some brands of clothes while suggesting others - on an anonymous forum discussing clothing options - is not, on any planet ‘bullying’.

Lentilweaver · 04/03/2024 07:41

@Frumpitydoo I am in London and go to the theatre often. These days a considerable number wear sweatpants, and sometimes even sweatpants with holes in them! I usually wear smart cords, smart jeans with a "nice top" and boots.

I also like the colour of this dressm though may not be to everyone's taste. I am not really one for florals or busy prints. Baukjen Brooke Plain Empire Line Jersey Dress, Dark Cedar at John Lewis & Partners

I went to the Savoy for afternoon tea for my 50th. I really enjoyed dressing up in a Hobbs dress and heels. Everyone was dressed up for the occasion, the Savoy is gorgeous, dress up and enjoy the treat x

heldinadream · 04/03/2024 07:44

@BlossomBlossomBlossom 'Jeez … Are Seasalt and White Stuff honestly the best S&B can offer to someone wanting to dress up?' Sneering.

'Nope … Can’t even be bothered to respond …' Condescending.

It's Style and Beauty you know? People's choices of clothes should not be laughed at. Make selections yourself without putting other people down for their obviously (to you) inferior taste.
I could say what I think of your choices, but I won't, because it's not the point I wanted to make.

Mikki77 · 04/03/2024 07:49

Wide leg trousers and a comfy pair of loafers for walking?

Lentilweaver · 04/03/2024 07:50

@Mikki77 that would be absolutely fine except OP says she wears them for work, so wants something different.

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 04/03/2024 07:51

You know, @heldinadream - I generally assume that people on MN enjoy the free flowing discussion - as I have done for more than a decade.

I guess, just as in real life, we don’t all understand one another.

Go well …

Oh my! Was going to direct you to a cheaper but infinitely (imo) more stylish ivory knitted dress at & Other Stories - but was stopped in my tracks by this:

https://www.stories.com/engbp/clothing/blouses-shirts/blouses/product.cropped-floral-appliqué-blouse-white.1212800003.html

Spend your budget on this one piece and wear with a skirt or trousers and flat shoes you already have? It’s so elegant and Spring-like. (I have a white broderie anglaise blouse in a similar shape, years old from MSGM, that comes out every Spring and can take me anywhere.) This would go beautifully with jeans for the rest of the year, too.

Edited

These suggestions are somewhat out there for a woman who usually wears jeans and trainers.

I wouldn’t have worn this cropped blouse that flashes my stomach if I was in my 20s let alone my current middle age.

I don’t mean to criticise, just want to tell OP to not be put off by the suggestions. It’s possible to be fashionable without being avant garde.

Lentilweaver · 04/03/2024 07:52

@Floatinginvacherin That is a lovely dress and a bargain for silk, though the bodice looks a bit odd to me.

Floatinginvacherin · 04/03/2024 07:54

I think you’d need to try it on to see how it worked on you, that’s true! I’m too flat chested for it myself I suspect.

Jigsaw have quite a few nice things at the moment - classy but interesting.

S&B nowadays seems to be overrun by people who want to go round in a binbag and flipflops and encourage OPs to do the same.

Ask for a Sazerac cocktail, it's to die for!

Did you pay £5k for a cocktail?!
It must have been amazing.

I did afternoon tea at the Ritz a couple of months ago and no-one wore jeans, there was a dress code. Not sure about the Savoy but why book somewhere nice to go in jeans?

I agree. When I went, albeit a few years ago, there was a dress code. Also true - why wear jeans and trainers for a special event?

No one will give a shit really London is very casual

The Savoy and Ritz aren't casual though for tea

OneFrenchEgg · 04/03/2024 09:09

Dress code: please wear whatever makes you feel elegant and comfortable

I think there's a difference though in being casual in where clothes come from, and the whole look. Personally I don't bother for the theatre but love dressing up a bit for afternoon tea. People notice I think but don't care iyswim. Waiter commented on my beautiful handbag and brought a rest for it.

That's not going to be jeans. The Ritz specifically say no jeans. I mean I live in them but an afternoon at the Savoy is all about dressing up surely? Yes that can be a dress from White Stuff or Seasalt, ignore the poster sneering at those shops and putting up links to ghastly weird jumpers. It's an occasion, why wouldn't you

Sorry, Egg that wasn't supposed to be aimed at you specifically
