Wardrobe Crisis!

SaraS12 · 02/03/2024 12:50

My husband is taking me away next weekend for a surprise weekend. The problem is that over the years my wardrobe has become a haven for jeans, leggings and ‘comfy mum wear’.

This will be the first time in over five years that we’ll be able to spend time together -just us, but I’m really stressed about looking my best - for me and for him.

I just won’t get anytime to head to the shops and going online is just completely overwhelming.

I want some new outfits that are elegant and help build my confidence but I don’t know where to start. I feel like I’ve lost myself.

Can anyone help inspire me or provide some advice?

I didn’t say “high heels”, I just meant most women do wear something resembling trainers inorder to be comfortable. I’m in and out of London frequently and the vast majority of women are wearing trainers.

You said the last thing you want to wear is a dress and heels. You’ll need trainers and trousers/jeans.

You're splitting hairs by quibbling about the word "heels".

LizzieSiddal · 03/03/2024 14:14

Anyway @SaraS12 hope you have a fantastic time and find some suitable outfits.

Yay I'm so happy for you! I'm coveting so much Sézane stuff but on a tight clothing budget for a few months after a big splurge. I feel a lovely vicarious pleasure in you buying so many lovely things from there. Have a gorgeous trip on every level!

If you like other stories and are getting the train into King’s Cross then there’s a massive store about 5 minutes from the station.. well worth a detour! One word of warning with their trousers and dresses.. I’m 5’3” and everything comes up massively long, which may or may not be an issue for you.

He’s taking me to a hotel in London (he’s not said where) and then we’re going out for dinner (again he’s not said where). So you can see why it’s stressing me out! I know it’ll be somewhere fancy and probably expensive.

I’d take this as an excuse to get myself a new LBD, I’m sure hubby will appreciate it very much if he’s used to the mumsie look.

Day dress. This is fabulous - cotton and wool mix so really versatile.

Dinner dress. Really easy to wear and flattering.

@TheOriginalFrench

poor woman in the day dress. I wonder how she dislocated her hip?

Tighginn · 04/03/2024 05:34

Don't waste money on clothes that will get shoved in the wardrobe and left for best, if you need something new, just pop to tu in Sainsbury's or next...he'll be more interest in you out of whatever it is you buy.

Gophering · 04/03/2024 06:02

Oh that camel sezane dress is lovely. I want it now but I am prone to a hot flush and worry it might be too warm for me. Tempted anyway.

SpringSprungALeak · 04/03/2024 10:01

@Gophering

its a lovely dress. I had a couple like that when I was younger. I no longer have the figure for it.

i understand the hot flush thing, but if it would look good I'd buy it & wear it selectively!!

Hello,

If anyone is interested I’ve got the mesh dress for Saturday night, which I’m going wear with patterned tights and some heels.

I’ve found out we’re going to the theatre in the afternoon (don’t know what we’re seeing) so have gone for the Harleen dress, as I’m thinking it could get too hot in there for jeans/trousers.

Thanks again for everyone’s help and suggestions.

Great choices! I’d love to own both of those.

BusterGonad · 09/03/2024 06:46

That sounds wonderful.

Debenhams online, honestly they have so many beautiful dresses and skirts and they're always having sales as well.

I'm the same height as you and an hourglass figure and I'm always in dresses or long skirts, this time of year I wear them with long boots, but if I'm going out for the evening I pair with heels.

If you want to look your best for YOU, then OK, but it doesn't seem right to want to look good for him. Unfortunately I can't make clothing suggestions because when I'm taken for a surprise weekend away I take mainly jeans etc. My mindspace is mainly taken up with making sure I have clothes for any weather, and as little as possible since I travel light. What I can say is that it shouldn't stress you. Have some fun shopping around but if it starts to become a chore and if you start feeling time pressure, then stop. Reconsider your current wardrobe. You may be able to find something in it. Then concentrate on the trip itself, not your clothes.

SaraS12 · 11/03/2024 16:54

Just to say we had a wonderful time at the weekend. We saw Mamma Mia at the theatre, then a wardrobe change and out for a romantic meal and evening. My husband loved my outfits and was so sweet, and it felt wonderful to get all dressed up after what feel like forever!

Buy a more luxurious version of clothes you already wear and make sure they fit.

Taking your coat to the dry-cleaners, ironing your existing clothes, cleaning your shoes and going to the hairdresser and more likely to make you feel more confident and look like a better version of yourself than panic-buying new outfits with 3 days to go.

That’s good to hear, @SaraS12!

Well done on RTFT, @Jeannne92
