Thoughts on wedding guest dress

I am going to a wedding at the beginning of May and would like your thoughts on this dress. I've looked at it so much I've lost any perspective.

The couple are my boyfriend's close friends however I will be meeting a lot of people for the first time so I want to make a good impression. I don't want to be too extra or anything.

What are your thoughts on this? Is it boring/unflattering? I've ordered low nudes heels and a nude clutch bag. A friend said it looks a bit winter weddingy.

This wedding is causing me so much stress!

Yeah sorry, it looks like a work outfit.

Meadowflower2023 · 08/03/2024 21:35

The first dress is much more suitable for a wedding, shame about the zip.

The second dress, especially with the blazer just looks like you're going into the office, sorry! You have such a lovely figure, you can do way better than that.

Meadowflower2023 · 08/03/2024 21:47

This is lovely @gertrudemortimer

I like the second outfit more. I don't think it's too worky, I think it's glam.

The first dress is lovely, second one is boring, office wear. @Meadowflower2023’s suggestion is nice too but I’d reorder the first and hope the zip issue is resolved. I’d definitely keep and wear more than once.

CuteCillian · 08/03/2024 21:53

No comparison to the first dress (which is perfect) I'm afraid.

Operationdark · 08/03/2024 21:54

First dress was gorgeous, are you sure you can't hide or ignore the zip? Quite like the second dress but blazer is awful, sorry .

Right I'm back. Unfortunately that dress (Ted baker by the way) has something wrong with the zip at the back and it buckles out in two different places. I tried on the same dress today at the store and they all do it! I'm gutted. Anyway I have a new contender and I couldn't resist this blazer but I don't think it goes even though it feels soooo lovely on. The shoes and the bag are what I ordered to match the ted baker dress, do they go?

What did the shop say? Can they rectify/fix it? That’s so irritating.

Overthebow · 08/03/2024 21:57

Go with the first dress, the second doesn’t look like a dress for a wedding it’s too much like a work dress.

It seems like there’s a fault with the zip generally, so even if OP were to keep it she’d be worrying in case it broke and she doesn’t want to waste her money if it does that.

AlohaOptima · 08/03/2024 21:59

Can you get the zip fixed by a seamstress? I know you shouldn’t have to on a brand new dress but the first one is really lovely on you.

AttaThat · 08/03/2024 22:00

Could you get the zip tailored? Such a lovely dress it would be a shame not to have it.

Second outfit is to work-y for me, sorry.

Maireas · 08/03/2024 22:01

I'm in agreement with pp - the first dress is gorgeous, and a perfect fit. What a shame about the zip. The second outfit is really nice, but not for a wedding. More an interview, or smart place of work.

Bad form for TB to have zip issues. They should pay for the tailoring of the zip really.

This might sound daft but .... when you say the zip buckles out in two different places.... have you had someone else look at it while you're wearing it, or is it buckling as you turn to look at it? I had a similar problem, with a zip sticking out. I tried it on to show a friend who might have been able to put a new zip in, and she said it was only buckling when I turned to look at it in the mirror. When I stood the way I would be when wearing it, it was fine. She had to take a photo and video to prove it! Probably not the same in your case but thought it worth mentioning.

Amybelle88 · 08/03/2024 22:26

You look beautiful in both and each have their own pros!

Your figure looks INCREDIBLE in the second and I love the blazer with it but not for a wedding.

I'd go for something in your hair with the second, too.

Oh the stress of dressing for a wedding.

gertrudemortimer · 08/03/2024 23:34

Thanks all. The blazer is out then, it's so helpful to get opinions from people who don't just say what they think I want to hear.

I know one poster said shoes and bag don't go with the new dress - are there any other opinions on that?

In regards to getting the first dress altered it's £160+ and that's with a discount, the second dress I added photos of is £68.

I'll attach photos of the buckling, could I wear the blazer to hide said faulty zip or is it definitely out? Blush

Thoughts on the blue dress I've attached are appreciated too, worth trying on?

@Amybelle88 I'm useless at hair, do you have any suggestions for a style a complete novice could achieve?

gertrudemortimer · 08/03/2024 23:40

@OMGitsnotgood I did think that at first but when I tried one on in store with the double mirrors it still does it no matter how I stand or straighten/slouch my back. The zip has a hard bit in the places where it buckles and each dress I felt had the same. I'm sure I looked like a maniac rubbing all of the zips

Go with the first without blazer - you look lovely. Don’t even think about it any more- problem sorted!
