Talk to me about waxed jackets!

My trusty parka broke yesterday (not bad going really, for an 8yr old coat from Asda!) and I'm on the hunt for a new parka style coat. I had a google and came across these from a company called Lands End. Anyone bought from this company? Should I get the coat? It seems an absolute steal at £65, way cheaper than an actual Barbour anyway! Do they smell? What kind of special care do they need?

Lands end have been going a while. I think they were a catalogue, they had little brochures in magazines. It seems like a good price for coat, get it , they may just have summer stock shortly.

I have a Fat Face wax jacket and I don't do anything special with it .

You do occasionally have to re-wax them so they remain waterproof, Barbour sell little tins, but you can get unbranded stuff too.

It looks like a bargain, @AintNobodyHereButUsChickens .

I don't think it will be like a Barbour, because the Lands' End one says you can machine wash it. You can't machine wash a Barbour wax jacket.

I re-proof my Barbour about once a year.

Read the reviews. Double zips usually are a bit tricky.

I would be wary about machine washing it. You would have to rewax it for sure afterwards. I rewax my Barbour every 8 months or so.

I've used Lands End for 21 years. Generally very good quality for the price, especially in the sale. My reservation about this coat is that it's only water repellent not waterproof (which their Squall jackets and coats are, but more expensive, excellent value in the sale). Barbours are waterproof for decades, if looked after carefully.
