So, I've bought this dress to wear to two smart casual meals out - but not jeans casual and not heels smart iyswim.

I'm 52, 5'7, size 18/20 and actually pleasantly surprised how flattering the dress is (not me in the pic, obviously!).

I've got a black biker jacket I was thinking of wearing with it but I don't know what to do with my feet! No heels as I'm going to be travelling on public transport for a couple of hours for one and walking to the other.

Are white trainers with a dress still a thing? Or will I look stupid? I have black biker type boots but don't think they work properly because it's a maxi dress.

Both meals are in the next two weeks so need to keep my feet dry - as it's bound to rain 😁

I've absolutely no budget and have been looking on the likes of Everything5Pounds but maybe £30 or thereabouts? Any suggestions? Even if you can't find an actual item within my budget, I'd be really grateful if you could suggest a type of shoe and then I can hit Vinted and eBay.

Thank you in advance!

I'd say strappy sandals like in the photo, but as you will be on public transport, white trainers should be fine. I'd go for ones that aren't ugly.
The dress looks great.

@KirstenBlest Thank you about the dress.

I'll look at some plain white trainers then. Comfort is definitely key here! I didn't know if that would be really dated and cringey.

I save strappy sandals for when I wear the dress in the summer and don't need to walk far!

Thanks for your advice.

What's "not ugly" ?

Flat boots are usually fine with maxi dresses but I agree, probably not that one.

KirstenBlest · 28/02/2024 19:15

The current trend is for 'ugly' trainers. Big chunky ones.

I was thinking Supergas or neat white trainer styles might look less obtrusive.

OldTinHat · 28/02/2024 19:32

Definitely not - I would look like an idiot in those!

So just plain white trainers. I'll pop into Shoe Zone tomorrow and have a look for something unobtrusive. I suspect you'd have to have a very large budget for ugly trainers, anyway!

There will be some 'yoof' at the first meal who will probably laugh their trainer socks off at my cheap footwear. I don't care! I need comfort. The local, walk to meal, is with fab friends who wouldn't notice if I turned up in a pair of slippers.

Everyone wears white trainers in the summer

White trainers will look great

OldTinHat · 28/02/2024 20:31

@Twoshoesnewshoes Clicked on the link, got all excited and ready to order but...I forgot to say I also have big trotters. They're a size 7 and they're sold out. Bah!

But thanks so much all of you. I know what I'm looking for now.

I've got a JD Sports, Sports Direct, TK Maxx and Next as well as Shoe Zone nearby so I'll have a bumble around those tomorrow, as well as the charity shops then come back and try eBay and Vinted if no luck.

Keep your fingers crossed!

Thanks again.
