Semi permanent hair dye

Hi
I am starting to get quite a few grey hairs that I'd like to cover. My hairdresser recommended L'Oreal Casting Creme 500 (Medium Brown) as a good match for my hair. I have used it a couple of times and it's ok - but the greys stay light (sort of pale brown) and the rest of my hair goes a shade darker (which I'm not keen on).

If I use shade 600 instead - Light brown - would this alter the colour of my (darker) hair? I don't think the dye formula contains bleach but I'm a novice and don't know what I'm doing!

I basically want to cover the greys without making the rest of my hair darker.

I feel like my options are:

  1. Use a lighter brown dye (unless this is going to somehow lighten ALL my hair)
  2. Try to put the 500 dye only on the grey strands - faffy and potentially uneven??)

Or is there something else I can do? Thanks!

You’ll need to let it fade right out-otherwise, when you use the lighter brown, the roots will be lighter than the rest of your hair. If anything, the rest will still go darker as your previously coloured hair will grab on to the dye. Semis do fade but there will still be a residue of dye so leave it a few weeks. I’m not a fan of Casting for my skin-it looks too harsh and dark. I like nice and easy ash brown colours-they don’t go too dark-even the medium comes out reasonably light. But every other semi I’ve tried apart from the ash brown shades haven’t looked good.

I agree with pp that now its dyed, it will be more porous so take colour more. I'd probably let it fade out as much as possible before trying again. I've used permanent dye in the past to even up different coloured hairs on my head (blonde/grey/dark brown) so I do think it does lighten as well as darken. But the trick I've learned is always to go a colour lighter than you think you need as the colour is always darker than on the box.
