I'm going to a charity ball, please can you help me find a dress?

I'm 5'5", size 14, decent legs, apple shaped with a blobby menopausal middle and hips. Top part of my arms to be covered. I'd prefer a rich colour, definitely not black. And I'm going to wear gold sparkly shoes.

Budget - up to £150? but hopefully I can sell on afterwards.

I found this on Quiz but the material looks a bit cheap, can you lovely people come up with anything better?

Lots of lovely sequins! Thank you. is it ok to wear a short dress to a charity ball?

I'd go all out with the sparkle especially if it's a ball. Sometimes like these. I always worry about being underdressed at these things so maybe they're a bit too much but I hope you find something you love and have a fabulous evening 😊

This says bridesmaid but I would wear to a mess do which would be similar dress code to a charity ball

edited sorry just seen it was a 12 but can't remove the suggestion

I bought the Silk Fred Sequin Plunge Maxi dress ( sorry I can't do links, just google it ) for a ball.
It did the job.
Similar figure to yours.
It was a perfect length, long at the back but had a split up the front.
The only problem was the sequins kept catching on each other.
It comes in gold also which looks lovely.

TK Maxx had some great stuff in near the festive season, not sure about now but worth a look.

Thank you, I’m a big fan of Vinted and I love the colours of that rainbow dress, not sure about the shape.

Not to sound sanctimonious but this is one dress code where I'd really try to get something second hand. Sequins were hugely fashionable a few years ago so there's masses of stuff on reselling sites, and they are notorious for being both environmentally unsound and (because they are so labour intensive to sew) liable to be produced by people in very poor working conditions. I'm not one to say no one should ever buy new but for this one I'd definitely go used.

fernsandlilies · 25/02/2024 14:40

Good point about the labour intensive process, and who it is that does the work. I’ve often wondered what it really involves to sew sequin fabric.
