Leather dress

I have a beautiful, soft leather dress. It's strapless and comes just above my knee.

I wore it once years ago, but felt overdressed as its not my usual style (I'm usually a pretty laid back dresser). Someone made a comment about how it looked like I had a fetish(!). After that I was too nervous to wear it again. Then I gained weight and couldn't wear it anyway.

I recently lost some weight and can almost fit into it again. I'd love to wear it out for my 40th later this year (most likely a meal and some drinks, no clubbing!).

Am I too old now for it? Can I rock it with some trainers too?

Usually I just wear what I like, so I'm not sure why this particular dress is giving me so much pause for thought.

Thanks anyone who votes/gives an opinion.

Maybe if you posted a photo (head cut off) someone could give you an opinion?
Personally I don’t think they look great, be it on Victoria beckham, a Kardashian or a coronation street actress, I just can’t put my finger on why though. That said, if it’s a dress you love, who cares what anyone thinks? If you feel good in it then the confidence you carry yourself with will make you look amazing.

Not too old to wear it. Agree that a picture would be helpful.

I say no to wearing trainers with it (then again, if I saw it I might change my mind).

bananaboats · 21/02/2024 18:49

Not too old but what I'm picturing from your description doesn't sound like it would go with trainers but hard to tell without a picture!

pictoosh · 21/02/2024 18:50

Need to see the leather dress.

pictoosh · 21/02/2024 18:52

Actually no, scrap that. I don't need to see the dress. If YOU like it then wear it. I don't think 40 has anything to do with it.

Leopardmatches · 21/02/2024 19:01

Maybe with a shirt/tshirt/thin jumper under? Rick it. I’d love to see it. I think whoever said fetishised wear tells you more about them than your loo.

Leopardmatches · 21/02/2024 19:07

*rock-it!

but wear it as you would a denim skirt or jeans. Maybe with a hoody over.

FairyPolka · 21/02/2024 19:09

When you’re 53, you’ll appreciate just how young 40 is. Absolutely wear it.

pictoosh · 21/02/2024 19:16

@Leopardmatches what? And what??

RunnerDown · 21/02/2024 19:25

I’m 60. I look back and wish I’d worn more of what I wanted when I was younger. And at 40 you are still young. You should go for it. Maybe not with trainers though

poorbuthappy · 21/02/2024 19:28

Sounds lovely. Would love to see a photo but okey cos I'm nosy 😂

Kdubs1981 · 21/02/2024 19:39

Leather is definitely having a moment and I can confidently say I don't look like a coronation street actress when I wear my dress or pencil skirt. I'm 42 and I think I look pretty good in it.

Honestly, just wear it if you like it!

I’m 55 and wear mine, I do don’t even consider I may be too old to wear it. I have loads of leather skirts and leggings, I always have had so I don’t think anything of wearing it.
Wear it to your 40th if it fits and you think you’ll enjoy wearing it. Why wear it with trainers though?
As it’s strapless you could always play around with different shirts, blouses, short kimonos, cardigans etc with it.

Elfbeth · 21/02/2024 22:03

Absolutely you can and should wear it. Not sure trainers would do it justice though

Imanapeman · 21/02/2024 22:07

Thanks all.

I know I should post a photo (always tut when other people don't 😁) but it doesn't quite zip up all the way yet. Will maybe try tomorrow.

As rightly pointed out, some day I'll (hopefully) be 60/70/80 and won't regret it then!
