My 16 year old daughter has asked me to take her shopping for a prom dress. I think she's hoping this will be a nice mother/ daughter bonding experience. Thing is, dressing up really isn't my thing and I have absolutely no idea what a prom dress is supposed to look like or where we might get one.
I really want this to be a positive experience for her (will do my very best to pretend I'm enjoying looking at dresses) as until a year or two ago clothes shopping with her involved going into one shop, grabbing a pair of jeans identical to the pair she was replacing, trying to coax her to look at a few other items as 2 t shirts and 2 hoodies isn't really enough clothes for a person to own, and leaving after 10 minutes with a hyper ventilating and traumatised child. In the last year or so she has very tentatively started acquiring a few more things, but these are overwhelmingly safe choices that will attract minimal attention. So although she is very excited about the prom, and the prospect of dressing up for it, I suspect she'll need a lot of guidance and will want something that doesn't stand out too much.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what sort of thing we should be looking for, and what shops would be good - we're going to head to Manchester one afternoon next week for a recce. Ideally we'll come away with a few ideas about the kind of things she likes and how much I'm going to have to fork out with our relationship still in tact...
