Plus size special dress

Any recommendations of online stores to try? I've become an expert deliveries roundabout returning clothes that don't fit or suit me.

I have a very special occasion coming up and I'm looking for a gorgeous midi dress. Happy to spend the money for something flattering - not completely black preferably - as it's very draining on my skin tone. Greens, blues, purples or gold good tones for me. Not red or orange or yellow tones.

I'm not keen on the 50s looks. I'm an apple so better something that's not trying to nip in to my non-existent waist. Maybe something flowy, boho, patterned. Can go up to £1k for something really special.

Any leads?

Would also highly recommend Scarlett & Jo, the layered ones are so flattering

I will check the Outnet and Ralph Lauren and maybe order a Rixo and see how it goes.

Which 100 stars Rachel Dresses do you have? Which is your favourite?

I have about six of them, but my favourite is the black stork print. Definitely belted though, either with their matching obi belts or a skinny gold metallic stretch belt (Etsy have some lovely designs).

I don’t really dress up much but have started going on cruises with formal nights so do a bit more.

I do really like Scarlett and Jo and have some lovely dresses from them that are also really comfortable to wear.

I also bought a dress from Apricot which is glittery, glamorous and quite flattering. I might be leaving glitter bits everywhere and not a natural fiber in sight so might be sweaty but it looks great so that’s okay😉

Hope & Ivy or Nancy Mac? Both have some lovely dresses

Thanks for the continuing contributions. I'm looking at all your suggestions - its good to have some new sites to check.

Wow that's a spectacular dress

I was at Cannes film festival last year at a few very glam parties and could have done with something like that. I ended up getting an ebay perfect dusky pink Donald Stanley - fantastic quality but I felt like a marquee and had no real ability to belt it properly with the silky belt it came with.

Bouledeneige · 13/02/2024 22:24

Wow love the dress Spanielsanddaughters but I don't think it would be large enough. Plus I think my tummy would be quite a feature.....

I'd love it myself but don't have the budget. It's a strong look and unusual, while also glamorous!

ManondeForce · 13/02/2024 22:45

Only goes up to 16 but so voluminous

Rina66 · 13/02/2024 22:52

Well I have never heard of a nurse sleeve!

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle
Lovely frock — gorgeous cloth and so dramatic.

@Bouledeneige
I am fatter than you but I think we have similar taste. I like the DVF, but If the amazing patterned silk dress is what you’d really like to wear, I’d be very tempted to find a dressmaker to make you something bespoke. Even buying silk twill from Liberty or a Soho cloth boutique, I don’t think you’d spend more than £300 on fabric. Which gives you plenty of budget to spend on having something made - the shapes you like are relatively simple though need to be cut well. If the dress shape suits you could also get a couple of frocks in less fancy fabrics to enjoy wearing on the daily which would bring the investment cost down iykwim.

I quite like this Liberty silk - but there is loads of choice beyond this https://www.libertylondon.com/uk/floral-symphony-crepe-de-chine-000789895.html#pos=30

alternatively, I am stalking this Rixo lovely that I cannot justify at the moment even tho I can see I’d get loads of wear out of it (As I keep reminding myself). But you might think too daytime?
