90s make up - maybe I need to update

I have realised that I am now that which I sneered at as young woman - middle aged women with blue eyeshadow, tiny black drawn on eyebrows, pale lips and big black hair because they were still using what they wore in the 60s.

Im in my 50s and I still have a fondness for lip gloss and a white splodge on the inside of my eye. If I'm honest, I miss body glitter.

Where does one go to update one's make up? My skin and face have changed over the last 30 years, it's time I noticed that.

Update I tried the One Step but although it feels nice ,it's nowhere near enough coverage for me, doesn't look any different when I apply it sadly. Back to ELDW 😊

LadyBird1973 · 23/02/2024 09:59

That's a shame @MrsPelligrinoPetrichor
Sometimes I put a bit of skin illuminator over the top on my cheekbones. Or you could try mixing it with a little foundation, seeing as you've spent the money already.
It might be enough Covid the summer if your skin needs less coverage then.

Forgot to mention that it's best applied either a damp beauty blender. If I use a dry one all the product soaks into the sponge.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/02/2024 10:09

I tried, fingers, sponge and brush. I'll keep playing with it. It does feel lovely on.

BusterGonad · 23/02/2024 10:19

Could you not mix half and half with your ELDW?

I'll give it a go tomorrow!

Eyeshadow first?????
What the fuck?!

LadyBird1973 · 23/02/2024 16:07

Actually, I've adopted the eyeshadow first thing and it's honestly a massive improvement. I'm finding eyeshadows these days are very powdery (even the expensive ones), so if you go eyes after base, you have to wipe away all the powdery bits that land on your face and then have to top up the base again.

Honestly, I love a base. Foundation with a brush.

All over. Then eyelash curlers. Then Phyto twist.

Then Chantacille mascara. I don't wear much make up.

i’m 63 and i like the ‘no makeup makeup look’ i mix my foundations to get exact shade, and just wear waterproof mascara, i have strong eyebrows which i was teased about at school, i had them professionally shaped regularly in my 30s and now i love them. didn’t know you could get tinted lip balm.. must look for that, i’m rubbish with lipstick, it never stays on. And i hate blusher, i go red easily anyway with getting hot.

LadyBird1973 · 29/02/2024 07:52

I love tinted lip balm. I'm finding as I get older that lipstick just doesn't look quite right a lot of the time. I bought the Clinique black honey and the new pink one, they look and feel nice, but if I'm completely honest, they don't look any better than the tinted burts bees - just more luxurious packaging.
My absolute favourite tinted lip balm is the Dior one in pink - looks absolutely gorgeous on.

I don’t understand why it’s bad to do eyeshadow first? I do base first then eyes as that’s just how I’ve always done it but now I’ve read about it here…… the other way round does make sense to me (spillage etc) so I’m going to try it. I can’t figure out what the downside of it is so
with all the shocked responses, I’m wondering what I’m missing. will someone explain? Thank you.

ToasterChic · 29/02/2024 10:58

P.s OP I totally get what you mean about wondering if “our” make up looks dated in ways which we can’t pick up on, because it matches the notion of beauty/grooming that we were socialised in to (like Smokey eyes, defined eyes, defined brows etc).

I live near a uni and the students there just seem to have a different look. Very fresh skin, groomed brows but not darkened, mascara but minimal eyeshadow except as a colour pop, and usually more defined lips. They look wonderful of course but it is just so far from the make up I learned “to be beautiful” that I would feel strange wearing it. And I do assume that my regular neutral shaded eyes, dark brows, eyeliner, nude lip etc looks to them as the woman with a puffy perm, blue shadow and frosted pink lips feels to me. I don’t have a solution though!

LadyBird1973 · 29/02/2024 11:13

I think we were always taught to do face first then eyes and this order is so ingrained it feels very weird to do it the other way around. But it does make sense to do eyes first really.

Whenever I've looked at YouTube tutorials for eyeshadow, they do this dark colour sweep on the outer eye where the socket bone is, but to me it looks sludgy and too heavy and a bit like a bruise. When did this become a thing?
I think I'm going to give up on trying to emulate the YouTube experts and just use a very neutral shade on my lids. I'm watching This Morning and wishing I looked like Rochelle Humes - her make up is beautiful.

I do base, a little bit of eye.

My DD did the space buns...
