90s make up - maybe I need to update

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 11/02/2024 09:40

I have realised that I am now that which I sneered at as young woman - middle aged women with blue eyeshadow, tiny black drawn on eyebrows, pale lips and big black hair because they were still using what they wore in the 60s.

Im in my 50s and I still have a fondness for lip gloss and a white splodge on the inside of my eye. If I'm honest, I miss body glitter.

Where does one go to update one's make up? My skin and face have changed over the last 30 years, it's time I noticed that.

No lipstick @SilverBranchGoldenPears

As I've got older I've turned more to neutral shades of taupe, chocolate and plums for my eyes, I use Dior quads, and Asian brands as I find them more flattering. I usually do all over in a taupe, add a shimmer cream shade to brow bones and inner corner, a medium shade in the crease and the dark shade near lashes, some medium shade under my lower lashes. I go for micro shimmers or lustrous formulas rather than mattes as personally I find matte eyeshadow aging and flat. I generally don't use liner, just the darker shades in my palette. I curl my lashes and use a thickening mascara. I do my brows with a powder or a clinique pencil. Blush is usually a cream one, high up on my cheekbones. Lipstick is a creamy formula, the L'Oréal ones in the gold bullet, sometimes a matte for evenings in a darker or brighter shade. Foundation is always a glowy one like Lancome tient miracle, No7 lift and luminate or hydraluminous. I always do base first, then eyes, cheeks and lips. I don't really get fall out from shadow and if I do i just tidy it with a cotton bud and foundation. Lisa Eldridge is very much my type of make up. I hate all this cut crease bollocks, thick eyeshadow, tones of concealer and 50 tones of foundation. And what I hate the most is warm foundation in cool toned skin. It's bloody awful and ugly.

😂

I miss Benefit Flamingo Fancy, tanning wash off body lotion with gold and pink shimmer. It was beautiful. What I really miss is Estee Lauders blush petals, a little round pot with different colour petal pieces, pinks, lilac, mauve etc and in the middle was a gold shimmer to highlight. So so beautiful. I used to spend my birthday money at the Estee Lauder counter as they always had a bonus time then.

Re getting anything permanent done, the safest way imo is to go to someone whose work you have seen in real life, not just website photos.
But it is a bit stressful because you are still trusting them with your face. And it does take a while to see final results - I didn't realise that you have 2 appointments for microblading so it's a good couple of months before you see it properly.

@BusterGonad I want to buy a Dior quad now! I really should stay off these threads when I need to save money!

I like Ali Andre too on You Tube, this video is good

Thanks for sharing this, I think I make all of the mistakes!

Tetsuo · 15/02/2024 11:10

Sorry @BusterGonad, that laughy face was an accidial, it wasn't meant for you very helpful post!

Tetsuo · 15/02/2024 11:15

Although if we're talking eye makeup I have to mention Sisely Phyto Eye twist, they are brilliant.

Hey lady, I'm pale and in my 50's.

Eyebrows are doing their thing.

My hair's going grey.

I use chantecaille foundation and mascara

You look lovely and definitely not in your 50's!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/02/2024 11:27

clarepetal · 11/02/2024 09:49

Base? For the eyes?! Wow.
I'm also stuck in the 90s. I also don't give a shit. Grin

Same. They will pry my eyeliner from my cold dead hands, and I do not want an orange face, a shiny face, or an inflated looking face.

icelolly12 · 15/02/2024 13:31

@Tetsuo you have incredible cheekbones, hair and features. Some of us aren't so genetically blessed!

BusterGonad · 15/02/2024 14:29

@LadyBird1973 I have 3 Dior quints, not quads, sorry I got that wrong. New Look, smoky taupes and dark browns. Plum Tulle, plums and silvers, Romantic Voyage pinks and lavenders. I also like Shishedo quads, I have 4 of these but my favourites are Kotto Street Vintage, a nice mix of neutrals and a Platinum Street Metals which is a mix of silvers, golds etc but these are all quite shimmery but I still like it a lot. I have a Chanel quad too which I got in Boots, in the reduced box for £12!!! Tisse Rivoli which is a mix of champagne, taupes and chocolate browns. It's a really nice cool toned palette and is so easy to just slap on and go. You can't go wrong with it as it's just so smudgy and the pigment is perfect for a quick swipe. I find some eyeshadows so heavy and hard going. I've had a few Urban Decay naked palettes (bought on a whim) and the pigment is hard, the shimmers are too chunky. I just don't like them, I gave them away. The Dior New Look palette can be a but too pigmented so I go steady with the darker shades and build it up, but it's worth it. I've had a few compliments whilst wearing it. One lady said I looked beautiful! 😂 I was so flattered.

Edited

They look great. I had the By Terry Ombre Blackstar ones and they were totally gorgeous. They died a death because I moved to South East Asia and they went all soft. My favorite was Misty moon. Such an amazing shade.

BusterGonad · 15/02/2024 14:35

*Misty Rock.

PawPaw24 · 15/02/2024 14:36

Alexandra anele is great on YouTube

Me too. I bloody love that video. She is so right about everything.

I’ve always loved make up and wear it every day I enjoy the process and find it a really relaxing way to start the day but now I’m in my mid fifties I’m just not enjoying it as much as I’m trying to disguise rather than enhance now and it’s a struggle, it’s the sag that gets me down, I only have expression wrinkles at the moment so they don’t bother me but the sag really does, also suddenly noticed the skin above my top lip now has ‘folds’ where the fuck did they come from? I watch a lot of make up tutorials but mainly by young women with their glass like skin, need to find someone my age before I shoot myself!

wwyd2021medicine · 15/02/2024 15:15

I like Erica Taylor on TikTok
DK how old you are but she shows how to update make up compared to how we were told to do it years ago.
It's made a significant difference to how I put on my make up now

LadyBird1973 · 15/02/2024 16:00

@BusterGonad I think I probably do need to invest in a decent but small palette - I have about 4 or 5 but the one I find easiest is a cheap W7 palette of neutrals. All the others I struggle to get on with now, including an urban decay (born to run). Loved the colours but just can't get them to work for me. I have a couple of Too Faced (sweet peach and a very glittery one) palettes but I'm finding the colours sludgy on me or just too 'much'. The main problem I think is that eye shadows seem so powdery these days - I'm sure they didn't used to flake so much. I think I need shadows that are a creamy powder maybe. I'm guessing that comes with the more high end brands, like Dior or Chanel.

Dior Soft Cashmere. It gets rave reviews.

LadyBird1973 · 15/02/2024 22:49

Thank you

BusterGonad · 16/02/2024 00:06

Obviously take a look at it first, but I think it's a nice suits everyone palette, I would've have bought ityself but it was always out of stock and now I haven't got so much disposable cash. One day it'll be mine! 😁

BusterGonad · 16/02/2024 00:10

What's your colouring @LadyBird1973 ?are you cool or warm?

Fraaahnces · 16/02/2024 00:21

I’m not too far behind your age with the ‘tache & eyesight to match. I am very pleased my DH was home when I was getting ready for work. I was experimenting with new eyeshadow and he said “Hey! The eyeshadow looks great Babe. You might want to go back and do the other eye, too.” (I had only done the eye closest to the mirror.)
I have found that a “less is more” look is much more flattering. If you have discoloration from your historical acne, use a colour-correcting base very lightly on affected areas only. (The best one is from a brand called EXA - it is expensive, but a much more natural colour than all the minty green ones. Failing that, the Guerlain one is expensive but glorious.) A tinted moisturiser (NARS, Laura Mercier, etc…. Everyone does one) will be more flattering and help even out skin tone. The Natasha Denona concealer is amazing. Curl your lashes, whip on some mascara and keep the bloody lipgloss. (I’m never giving up on mine.)

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/02/2024 00:36

It'll be a cold day in hell before I do my eyeshadow first!
