90s make up - maybe I need to update

I have realised that I am now that which I sneered at as young woman - middle aged women with blue eyeshadow, tiny black drawn on eyebrows, pale lips and big black hair because they were still using what they wore in the 60s.

Im in my 50s and I still have a fondness for lip gloss and a white splodge on the inside of my eye. If I'm honest, I miss body glitter.

Where does one go to update one's make up? My skin and face have changed over the last 30 years, it's time I noticed that.

Honestly OP, look into microblading, especially if your eyebrows are very sparse. It really does frame the face and dramatically changes how you look. Mine are very natural looking, they don't have to be obviously 'done'.

I really don't think they dramatically change how people look at all, often it literally just looks like you have big fake eyebrows.

More natural ones can look nicer but I really don't think they make the difference to most peoples faces that they think it does.

It'll be a cold day in hell before I do my eyeshadow first!

😂😂😂 Me too. Lisa Eldridge does her base first I believe and she's my type of guru.

BusterGonad · 16/02/2024 04:31

@Fraaahnces I've recently been getting into lip glaze stains. I've bought a nice berry one called Plum Jam and a rose one Drunk on Rose (The Face Shop). They are super nice but lips need to be in good condition so they don't stain the dry bits, the same brand do a lip blur, so it's a semi matte version, like a souffle and it's super flattering. I've totally given up on long lasting tattoo style lip inks. They are always dry and make your lips look like dried mango. Too Kardashian esque for me. Bullet lipsticks are my all time favourites but day to day I love a chubby glossy stick.

LadyBird1973 · 16/02/2024 06:15

@BusterGonad I don't really know if I'm cool or warm. I've never properly been able to work it out. I have brown eyes and hair, pale skin (but not milk bottle white) freckles. I can 'catch the sun' as my mum would say but don't go that glorious golden colour and I burn quite easily. I've tried looking a my veins to see if they are blue or green but they aren't distinctly either. I can wear both gold and silver jewellery, but I am more drawn to silver.
Would definitely want to see the Dior eyeshadow irl, but it looks gorgeous in the picture online.

@kkloo I agree that they have to be a natural look - too many people imo do their eyebrows too dark for their colouring or deviate a bit far from their natural shape. I think good eyebrows do frame the face nicely and lift the eyes. Obviously it's not as dramatic as more invasive treatments.

For me OP I’d maybe go to a counter like Bobbi Brown and do if they still do it a makeup bag refresh. This is a mini makeover where you can buy products afterwards but they charge eg £5 for it. You take in your current products. Then you can also look at other makeup stands in the store.

I don’t do contouring, I was given a session in it in a dept store in Oxford street about 10 years ago, it looked great and I bought the palette and when I tried it I couldn’t replicate it!

I also bought the brow colour by Benefit and I think my eyebrows look better without it! I’ve got fairly strong eyebrows which I don’t even pluck now. Can’t be bothered getting them done every month etc either especially after one beautician left me with cuts and scabbing after she forgot to ask me if I used retinol.

I agree with @BusterGonad Chanel and Dior quads or quints are classics and so flattering. Daniel Sandler watercolour blush is a new rediscovery which I’ve re bought twice and forgot about. I prefer it to cream blush.

And an Iris Apfel for Ciate eyeshadow palette I got last year has a turquoise shadow which I’ve worn as a stripe of eyeliner or eye shadow.

I also tend to slick Vaseline or Dr Paw paw on my eyebrows to give definition. In fact, is there a coloured version of this about does anyone know? I used to pluck my eyebrows like mad in my 20s and any stray hairs I thought I looked like a wolf!

BusterGonad · 16/02/2024 06:54

@LadyBird1973 You sound similar to me, I'm pale with dark hair, freckles and prone to blushing. I do tan, but it takes me a while, I would burn without sun lotion. I have Hazel eyes. In foundation I'm usually Cool ivory, rose ivory, sand ivory etc...

BusterGonad · 16/02/2024 08:39

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain you can get brow mascara in various shades, I've not tried it as I prefer to powder them on, I try to use a cool shade so I don't have orange toned brown eyebrows. My clinique one is dark brown (I think) and it's the thin one and the powder I use is Illamasqua Eyebrow Cake Thunder. I've had it for years. Maybe 8 or 9. It's still going strong.

LadyBird1973 · 16/02/2024 09:21

@BusterGonad I've given up on foundation - can never get the colour right. I just use the Stila One Step corrector, which is foolproof. I'm quite lucky with my skin, so I can get away with that.

I find it really hard to throw away makeup, even though I know I'd be better with less. I keep buying lipsticks too even though I don't really suit them and am better with a tinted balm.

Ooh thanks for this tip! If I need colour I actually just brush it on with a brown eyeshadow like you do.

Do they still do a clear mascara for brows and lashes that was around when I was a teen I wonder?

I tend to agree.

One friend last year after she’d had hers done looked like Joan Crawford and had to wait for it to fade out I think! Not the look most women are after!

MoiraMoira · 16/02/2024 09:37

I have bought some Trinny London and like it. It is dead simple and I look brighter.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 16/02/2024 09:38

NCfor24 · 11/02/2024 09:59

I love the Trinny London videos for how to do makeup. Never bought any of the products but there's a great advert/tutorial running at the moment with a similar age lady...and Trinny just turned 60 this week apparently.
It's all very natural looking but for a bit more glam I've learned that eyeshadow is less harsh under eyes than eyeliner, and using a 2-3 shades to help lift/open/brighten makes a world of difference!
I'm practicing with contour and highlight with a double-ended NYX crayon but I'm still on the fence and thinking embracing my chubby cheeks is fine!

Edited

Don’t forget that Trinny bless her has probably had a F load of procedures and PS and uses expensive skincare. So of course she won’t look her real age! Got to admire her though. She’s been in the game a while so must be doing something right.

Cheeesus · 16/02/2024 09:40

Looking at my teen daughter, I don’t think there’s as much difference from 90s to now as there was between 60s and 80s and 90s.

She sometimes wear lip gloss, definitely does the highlight at the corner of her eyes. Bigger, darker eyebrows, yes and stupid blusher all over the cheeks. But those are the main differences that I can see. So I wouldn’t think that you are obviously dated OP.

LoreleiG · 16/02/2024 09:43

I had no idea lip gloss was out of fashion. My 13 year old has several. Doing eyeshadow first will never happen here either. My concession to modernity is using a highlighter.

GN637 · 16/02/2024 09:46

Op have you seen what a lot of the younger ones look like?? The 90s were much better. My 15 yo wears sparkly white stuff at the inner corners of her eyes and lipgloss. She has perfect eyebrows naturally so thankfully doesn't go for the contoured to death inflated caterpillar that's been tangoed look.

Moonshine5 · 16/02/2024 09:48

Ali Andre has good tips but I would not describe her make up as fashionable / trendy; more classic beauty.

That's a good point. I'm not going to aim for geometric eyebrows and mosiac eyeshadow.

Really, I'm at "pluck my chin, smudge on some lippy and pull on some Spanx level."

So I just need to learn what the new stuff is and how to do foundation that doesn't clump or powder that doesn't show my wrinkles.

This is really helpful, thanks.

I don't think lip gloss is out of fashion, it's just been rebranded as lip oil 🙄, Dior are killing it with theirs 😂

BusterGonad · 16/02/2024 11:02

Clear mascara is still available, a cheapy is the Essence brand. No7 do one too. I remember back when I was a teenager getting the Covergirl one in my stocking. I loved it.

I'm interested in this and having googled there seems to be a medium tone and a universal one, what did you use?

LadyBird1973 · 16/02/2024 11:14

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor I use the universal one. I tested the medium tone in the shop and it was too dark for me.

GN637 · 16/02/2024 11:56

I just wear Loreal true match foundation, better than sex brown mascara and Clinique loose powder. If I feel fancy I might apply bronzing stuff to cheekbones and eyelids. It's a Rimmel palette I think or no 17. I don't wear lipstick or lipgloss generally. I'm thinking of having my eyebrows shaped and tinted. They are a bit invisible. I am pale but the rosy cheeked kind with golden honey blond with hints of red hair and 47. I never go out so never bother much.

Thank you 😊 another question, have watched you tube reviews and all good, looks perfect but written reviews mention a glittery/ gold sheen, I definitely don't want that, how obvious is it?

Poirott · 16/02/2024 12:36

Tetsuo · 15/02/2024 05:04

Hey lady, I'm pale and in my 50's.

Eyebrows are doing their thing.

My hair's going grey.

I use chantecaille foundation and mascara

I like your lamp. Where did you get it from? <misses point of the thread>

LadyBird1973 · 16/02/2024 17:32

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor I've just stated stared at my face in the mirror and I can't see any glittery gold sheen on me. It's definitely this one ?
