Elegant Casual? What is that??

I have a work lunch in London at the end of the month. The dress code on the invite is "Elegant Casual"

I know elegant, smart, casual and smart casual but what on earth is elegant casual?

Day to day I'm jeans and a jumper type and fond of a blazer

I'm 34, has anyone had this dress code and can show me what you wore or how you interpret?

I'll also feel ridiculous if this is a common style and I'm unaware of it 😂

I'd read it the same as smart casual. Never heard of an 'elegant' dresscode, doesn't exist?

Wide black trousers, a nice top and some bling?

For me it evokes a pair of expensive well- fitting jeans, a silk shirt and necklaces

Google references from American sites.

Elegant casual is also known as “ casual elegance” and is typically similar to something you would wear to a country club or upscale restaurant. A step above resort evening, with this dress code, men are expected to wear a long-sleeve dress shirt with slacks and dress shoes—no shorts, t-shirts, or sandals.

That's what I thought! 😂🤷‍♀️

Sorry, it cut women off.

Women can wear skirts or pants with a nice top or a dress. Both women and men should opt for dressier shoes, though dress sandals can still be appropriate.

I did think this might be suitable also xx

It sounds like it means dress up nicely, but it's not the type of event which cocktail dresses or evening gowns would be suitable for.

For ladies, I'd expect to see dresses or tops of decent quality material, perhaps a bit slinky worn with heels or suitably tasteful flat sandals. I wouldn't expect to see jeans at an event described as elegant casual, despite the fact this is the first time I've ever heard the term! 🤣🤣🤣

Honestly I'm thankfull I'm not the only person to have never heard of it.
Once I've been I'll have a better understanding and know for next time 🤷‍♀️😂 xx

It puts me in mind of more silk shirt than cotton button-down shirt, but I don't think that's really true!

I think it's a long winded way of saying no jeans, trainers or hoodies.
