Capsule shoe collection

I’ve accumulated a lot of shoes, 90% of which I don’t wear but feel I should hold on to just in case I have the need for a pair of heels. I mostly WFH, 2 young kids so practical is what I need most. Does anyone have capsule shoe collection they’d like to share? Ideally I’d get rid of all my old battered heels and invest in maybe 1/2 replacements to see me through the rare occasion I need them.

I'm no fashion guru however I have a bit of a capsule shoe collection.
If I am buying clothes I always think, what shoes do I have that I can wear with it.

Daily wear:
My work shoes (flat,boring,black/practial as per work policy)
Black leather converse
White converse for better weather (will prob need replacing this year)
Black Chelsea DM's
Pair of flat sandals for summer months (get replaced every 1-2 years)
Running shoes.

Occasional/smart wear:
Black suede heeled ankle boots
Black suede heeled sandals
Black suede KG shoes I have had forever that I can't bear to part with and are possible about to be on trend again.
Tan suede heeled sandals.
Leather nude heels.

Listing it makes me feel like that's quite a lot though!

Thanks! That’s a lot less than what I have. I also have a ridiculous number of practical shoes walking shoes/boots/sandals/trail shoes/weights trainers/running trainers/work boots. I Think that’s why o want to cull the dressier shoes as I don’t really need so many options

I started to write a list and got embarrassed at HOW MANY pairs I have.

I have all the pairs.

No capsule for me, I keep everything!

DinosaurOfFire · 07/02/2024 11:55

I have a capsule shoe wardrobe, I own:
1 pair of flat knee high boots for everyday, I wear these most days in autumn/ winter and on rainy colder days in spring
1 pair of smart black shoes for formal events (funerals, job interviews, that sort of thing)
About 3 pairs of canvas lace up casual shoes in different colours (I like skechers bobs). I wear these with jeans, summer dresses, etc.
1 pair of sporty trainers that I also use for walking long distance
1 pair of wellies for camping and the garden
2 pairs of flat leather sandals- one brown one black. These are suitable for wearing with casual summer dresses/ jeans as well as wearing with smarter outfits during the summer months.
I don't own a pair of heels as I got annoyed with them. I figure if I need heels for any specific reason I can buy some if and when I have a need for them.

SnowsFalling · 07/02/2024 11:55

I'm not fashionable, but:
A pair of flat black work shoes
A pair of trainers for the weekend
Pair of black boots
Pair of running shoes
Pair of walking boots
Pair of summer everyday sandals
Pair of silver sandals

I rarely wear dresses. I'd need to buy shoes if I wanted to wear a smart dress in the winter (but, tbf I'd also need to buy the dress and tights!)

Mairzydotes · 07/02/2024 20:29

Depending on your style/ taste I'd suggest you base your capsule around
Summer sandals for hot days
Winter boots suitable for bad weather
Smarter boots
Trainers, maybe a white pair ,black pair and a more sporty pair

DappledThings · 07/02/2024 20:38

I own more than I originally thought once I added them up:
One pair of Converse type trainers worn almost daily
One pair of real trainers for exercise I never take
One pair flat black ankle boots with furry lining for colder days
One pair of sandals
One pair of wellies
One pair of walking boots
One pair of patent black ballet flats for all occassions requiring any element of dressing up
One pair of gardening shoes, the plastic clog ones you get in garden centres.

So eight pairs. Seems like a lot to me but covers all eventualities so maybe not unreasonable.

Thanks for posting your list. It seems very doable.
Out of interest can I ask what you wear black suede sandals with? I can't imagine wearing black shoes in summer? My sandals are all tan or else numerous colours that I stupidly bought thinking they'd be bright but of course most of them are barely worn as I always reach for tan sandals.

semideponent · 07/02/2024 20:58

Hmmm...obviously you need now and everyday shoes. It sounds like you're covered on this. It's the "one off", "one day" , "perhaps" moments that have you questioning whether to keep or donate etc.

Something about who you could and will be? Keeping memories/possibilities alive?

Believe me, I speak from the regretful standpoint of shoes I've had and given away. A pair of blue suede Reiss heels comes to mind.

Precipice · 07/02/2024 21:14

I don't have a capsule collection; I just have not that many shoes!

I have:
Walking boots
Oxblood leather boots

Blue trainers (Asics)
Brown (tan?) suede derby shoes
Black leather derby shoes (generally just wear these for conferences and the like)

Brown leather sandals
Brown leather flipflops (slide on sandals?)

Two pairs of swimming pool flipflops

Of shoes that I don't really wear or need a little upkeep, I have two pairs of leather boots, one brown and one grainy black leather. But I find these have a less comfortable sole/heel. That is, like the oxblood ones I do wear, they're not heels, but they are slightly heeled in the way quite common for boots, if you know what I mean.

The shoes don't necessarily match for me. The suede derbies are quite new. Otherwise in warmer months I'm largely in the Asics, even when this turquoisy-blue doesn't match my top. Would want to get another pair of spring-autumn shoes at some point. Asics are terribly for rain and suede can get marked too, though there pavement splashing feels worse than just normal rain.

HillyHoney · 07/02/2024 21:19

I have a ludicrous number of pairs of shoes 😳 on the plus side, I keep them for years and years.

Day-to-day I mainly wear black suede Converse Chuck Taylors, black Nike Internationalist, or chunky flat black leather ankle boots. In the summer it's mainly leather sandals and Tevas

Nowadays I only really have 2/3 pairs of heels - all for weddings/going out (I never wear them for work). I have some gold metallic black heels sandals from Boden that are really useful - go with any formal/party wear, some metallic Esska Charlies that I need to get on Vinted as they're SO heavy, and some tan/nude suede block heels sandals that are surprisingly useful.

satbythecosyfire · 07/02/2024 21:57

@semideponent Yes! A lot of my shoes are pre kid professional/going out type. I haven’t worn in years and don’t know if I ever will again. I thought if I could just cover these eventualities with 1/2 good quality one shoe fits all option it would allow me to clear out.
