to straighten teeth or not

my bottom teeth were never straightened as a kid. I had a brace for my top teeth. I have no problems eating so i wondere is it actually worth spending thousands on getting my bottom teeth done. I do not think its going to make any difference to my life. I am a confident person and so unless it really impacts on my eating then why bother. I have a friend who has very straight white teeth. She never needed braces as a child and her teeth are fairly white. She is no better off than me despite having better teeth. She is middle aged and has very few fillings, never had a crown or a root canal and is paranoid about her teeth and visits the hygenist evrey 3 months. I think it would be a waste of money to straighten my lower teeth. It is not suddenly going to make me earn lots of new friends or get a wondereful man. My personality will still be the same and a man will go for that and to be honest ive seen people with worse teeth than mine, I am a fairly smart person and friendly so I think spending up to 5k would be money down the drain all for the sake of vanity. My friend keeps going on about how people should have nice looking teeth but where has it got her. She is middle aged and single and does not go on dates. She looks nicee but something is missing in her style or personality that does not attract dates. She is not the sort of person that catches a mans eye and yet she owns her own property and despite being middle aged, she looks 20 years younger.

So you think women straighten their teeth to get a man 🤔

Rumpelslutskin · 03/02/2024 05:14

If you have healthy teeth that don't bother you LEAVE THEM ALONE!

Your friend might be hyperfixated on teeth because its her best asset, gets complimented by dentists and others on her teeth. When she goes on about it she might not be talking about your teeth but much worse teeth of others, you dont have to take it personally and you could ask her if she is talking about your teeth.

Cosmetic dental work and straightening can be life changing if it's major issue i had cosmetic dental treatment and I wish I hadn't because even though the change was cosmetically for the better, nobody even noticed it. Nobody is treating me differently because of my teeth. It also created new sensitivity problems and i hate how my teeth 'sit' now at rest even though they look better when I smile and my attractiveness is improved when I smile, my quality of life has declined in other ways in terms of comfort.

I think you'd need to really hate your current teeth or have a serious medical need to see a real change for the better.
Invest your 5k and tune out your friend when she goes off on a dental rant.

She looks nicee but something is missing in her style or personality that does not attract dates.

This is your friend, you say?

BlackSwan · 03/02/2024 06:04

Something is missing in her personality, you say. Interesting.

If I can read between the lines you are annoyed by your friend mentioning your teeth and want reasons to come back at her when she does this?

Your current reasons come across as very judgmental. It’s enough for you to not want a brace. You don’t have to put others down who do.

In the words of some Instagram post - you be you and let your friend be her.

Covetthee · 03/02/2024 06:14

All I got from this is, you don’t sound like a nice friend at all.

Flute56 · 03/02/2024 06:17

well I did not realise it could cause other issues. My teeth are not that healthy because I have a lot of fillings and a couple of crowns and have had two root canals which is not good. However I still have my teeth. I have seen people with worse teeth than mine and I do not actually hate my teeth but when you see people with very straight teeth you think oh I wish mine were like that and I know for a fact that some of these people have not had cosmetic work done.

I always wonder what my teeth would have looked like if I had a brace as a child. I was referrd to an orthodintist when i was about 12 because my top teeth were overcrowded and my bit was not sitting correctly so I had a few teeth out and wore a brace to straighten my teeth and correct my bite. My parents were told that I might need a brace for the bottom teeth as well but for some reason I never got one, I dont think my parents ever insisted I got one or asked why. I was told at the time that the orthodontist did not think my bottom teeth were crooked enough to warrant a brace but its only my front four teeth that are a bit lopsided, My botton front teeth are straight but the one tooth eithere side of the bottom front teeth go slightly inwards and I dont think they went inwards that much years ago. The rest of my bottom teeth are perfetly lined up

it seems as though you’re spending a lot of time overthinking this. Bottom teeth barely show so really no need to spend thousands on them, save your money for more essential things.

ItookYourJob · 03/02/2024 09:06

Of you have crowns, I’d rather not disturb them. I think leaving healthy teeth alone is the best advise.

Rumpelslutskin · 03/02/2024 09:30

I think it is rare to havr naturally good teeth, like Hollywood perfection good not just decent good. Most people with great teeth have had some help even if just a bit of bonding or whitening.
Crowns can come loose or need redoing as alignment will differ.

Nobody is perfect, if.her teeth are her pride and joy let her enjoy it! I'm sure you have other things that are genetically unfair like having great brows, skin or toes or whatever!
You could change the subject or big up something you have.
