Outfit ideas for turning 40

I'm turning 40 in a couple of months and I'm looking for suggestions for something to wear! I'll be celebrating with my family, and having dinner with a few friends, so no massive birthday bash or anything, but I thought it would be nice to dress up a bit.

I haven't really gone "out out" since having kids so I don't really know what suits me, since I don't really have a style any more - unless leggings and a hoodie counts as a style?! I'm all about comfort anyway.

I quite liked this skirt or something similar perhaps.

I'm tall (175cm) and have quite broad shoulders, so tend to avoid strapless and halterneck tops, and I wouldn't be comfortable in anything too tight. Ideally under £100 too.

That’s a lovely skirt. I’ve been to quite a few 40th parties lately and the de rigueur outfit for the birthday celebrant seems to be sequin jumpsuits like:

@OolongTeaDrinker thanks for the ideas! Yes, I've seen jumpsuits are very in and often suggested on these types of threads! I'll have to try a couple on and see if it's something that would suit me

Obviously I'm not sure on your clothes size but Yours clothing have some really nice, classy clothes that don't break the bank

I get a lot of style ideas from TikTok/ Instagram. There’s quite a few influencers for over 30s/ tall or curvy to get an idea of what would suit you too. I’ve seen a few influencers posting this white Zara suit co-ord, which for me would get used lots as you can wear the trousers separately with a nice top and the blazer separately with jeans and a tshirt more casually.

I agree with if it’s in a few months something more seasonal.

I too went down the jumpsuit route for mine last year but it was in the cooler months. I had a few celebrations and also got a silk Fred shirt dress.

Make sure you can get it on and off comfortably yourself if you're considering a jumpsuit 😂

I'm 5"10, wide shoulders and hips and dislike my arms so only like sleeves.

My dm advised me to go for quality clothing as I got older.

The drive ‘em wild dresses on dlsb are fab as you can wear them in a range of ways depending how daring you feel.. have a look on the website as their jumpsuits are lovely too - I’ve got a couple of both and they’re very flattering. Perfect for a low key ‘special birthday’

Following with interest! @mummyof2boys89 could you share the names of any instagram/tiktok influences you follow who are 30+? Especially those who are not a size 8 😅 find it hard to get inspiration from when they’re not a similar size to me!

Or you could whatever your shape wear something voluptuous but classy that doesn't come from m and s.you are only 40 ffs
