Alternative prom dress- help us!

Hi all, my daughter is very indie and has her own unique style.
Prom is in July .
She has her heart set on this dress.
She is a tall and slim size 12.
Dark hair, shoulder length.
Can someone please help us with what shoes and (if any) accessories we will.need to prom this dress up.
Heels are a total no and I think boots will be too hot for July.
Also need make up and hair ideas.
Thanks. !

Converse Allstars? Really, if she's indie and going for that (which is a bit '1970s nightie' for my taste) she can wear what she wants.

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 23/01/2024 17:40

What does she want to wear on her feet? I agree boots might be a bit hot but you can get cut out boots, so no heel or toes in them, not sure what their called but my DS gf has some

Bigearringsbigsmile · 23/01/2024 17:41

It's a nightie isn't it?

Jeffjefftyjeff · 23/01/2024 17:44

when I was an indie chick, I would still have worn boots in summer (DMs or converse). Maybe the gladiator style sandals? Lots of wrappy straps up leg? Or flat sandals with complicated toe arrangements (and toe rings)

beetr00 · 23/01/2024 17:48

if you look at the picture online they team it up with DM's and the Penelope Long Crochet Cardigan.

reviews also suggest wearing "a harness"? (no clue what that even is myself) 😄

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 23/01/2024 17:49

DD wore something similar from Urban Outfitters with DM boots to her Y11 prom a couple of years ago. She was not the only one!

Pieceofpurplesky · 23/01/2024 17:55

I wore something similar to this to a wedding last year, they would work (and be worn again)

Mine had a fairly traditional dress but wore DM boots with coordinating laces Smile

NewYearNewCalendar · 23/01/2024 17:58

I would have worn it with DMs. If she wants something fancier but alternative then irregular choice or chocolaticas maybe.

Pieceofpurplesky · 23/01/2024 17:59

Sorry posted too soon.

Hair - does she wear ribbons at all (I work with a few alternative teens). Or could she just dye the sides?

Minimal jewellery - silver bangles and hooped earrings. Lots of chunky rings.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 23/01/2024 18:00

DMs - I wore them to my prom in 1992!
DM sandals (or similar)are a good shout and she’ll get lots of wear out of them.
i would suggest hair up and maybe jewellery with stones in such as amber or jade to bring some colour.

Violetparis · 23/01/2024 18:03

Doc Marten sandals or other similar chunky sandals or as others have said converse or docs.

KnickerlessParsons · 23/01/2024 18:23

There is no way I'd let my teen DD go to prom in a negligée.

But teenagers don't worry about being too hot or too cold. It's all about the look. So boots.

DrFosterWentToGloucester23 · 23/01/2024 18:26

Plenty of DM boots and Converse at last year’s prom here. Oddly enough, it was the boys that stayed conventional. Girls’ outfits were more diverse.

Fullofeffingjoy · 23/01/2024 18:37

She has pored over dresses and this is the one she keeps coming back to.
Converse and DMs looking likely so far!

I would say converse with black ribbon laces to match in with the dress.
And for the people clutching their pearls are the notion of any teen wearing a nightie as a prom dress- we did exactly the same damn thing in the 90s and nobody batted an eyelid then. I love that your girl has her own style, good for her! Bet she'll look fantastic!

Fullofeffingjoy · 23/01/2024 21:39

Thankyou!
I think some of the "proper prom" dresses are more revealing.. leg splits and low cut , low back etc 😆

I love that dress . I would have worn it as a teen . Lots of shoes would go depending what look she goes for . Does she have creepers , or Chunky shoes / chunky sandals. Or doc martens sandals

excelledyourself · 23/01/2024 22:24

I like it!

I feel like DM sandals would 'go' best, but glittery cons would possibly win me over

I was thinking of these too.

I think it's a lovely dress, btw.

I guarantee that there'll be "conventional" dresses at the prom that are far more revealing!

Thanks for the lovely and helpful replies so far xx
