Replacing bags on insurance

Insureittothehilt · 21/01/2024 10:52

I had all my designer bags stolen - some were old, but insurance company pays for like replacement with new.
So I have about £8k to spend on bags.
Plus up to £8k more to.add if needed (that was for stolen jewllery that I won't be replacing).

Should I get a chanel handbag. I'd use it, but probably not masses. Dh says Hermes Kelly for investment purposes is much better. Can you even buy a new kelly for that? Pre loved?

Ridiculous situation, I expect I'll end up buying nothing and the money gaining low interest until I fritter it on daily treats....

Anyone?

Kelly’s might be a bit more at the moment, but the good news is there is a waiting list open (you say what leather and colour you would like, and if they get one in the next six months they will call you - depending on how many other people are waiting) It will only increase in value. Chanel quality has gone down, with the added cheek of a huge price hike. Avoid.

I would purchase a bag that you want and want to use. A Hermes Kelly would have to be preloved and would you already been paying for the increase in value?
I got a Chanel Boy bag last year as an extremely early retirement present. My thoughts are that I can use it for god knows how many years before I am old!

Hermes Birkin and Kelly are way beyond £8. There are other Hermes bags that would be affordable Chanel you could get new.
Do you want to spend the whole lot on one or two bags or do you want a few? How many?

I would think of the type of bag/s you want and go from there.

Evening shoulder bag
Clutch
Big tote
Top handle handbag etc.

I could spend up to £16k but idk if even that would get a new hermes Kelly?

I don't think I need a selection of bags, the whole burglary has put me off. And i went to ysl/ gucci etc and most simply didn't feel like they would stand up to wear.

Hence wanting investment pieces. I did read that to get onto H wait list for a jelly or birkin, you need to have a purchase history in H already which I don't!

What bags were stolen and do you miss or want to replace those?

Hermes requires a pre-spend for quota bags. Birkin/Kelly or constance as far as I was aware. Don't think it's as easy as walking in and being offered the bag you want in the colour or leather of your choice. I struggle with the notion of spending big bucks to get it offered.

Chanel is ridiculously priced at the moment. Close to 9k for a classic medium flap bag. A price increase is apparently imminent.

I guess in your position I would try to decide if I missed anything then replace that. If not that fussed would keep the money or spend on a nice piece of jewellery.

Thanks. I don't really miss my bags much - They were a bit logo'd.

I have separate money for jewellery that was taken :(

(Already replaced some diamonds with lab grown which I'm loving)

Yes, it's such a big hype. You need to curate a relationship with a sales assistant. Buy lots of other Hermes items. Then artfully mention you would love a birkin/kelly. I'm too old for this shit. I have a couple of birkins and 3 Kellys from a time where it was tricky but not impossible. I don't even really use them

redheadsaregreat · 26/01/2024 18:48

But you do need some bags in your life. Make a list of what you need then look to see what fits those categories

Insureittothehilt · 26/01/2024 18:50

I was going to send DH in as apparently men score better.

I have some bags - they didn't take a nice summer celine handbag, they didn't find some clutches, or recognise loewe is expensive brand. Just after LV and Gucci, whixh I don't even love any more.

Maybe I have enough bags (i do)

Have a look at the Sellier Knightsbridge website ( preloved / secondhand ) and see if there is anything on it you like.
I have never bought from there so have no idea re authenticity.

A friend had seen a bag she really loved on a reselling website - not Sellier, Vestiare or Vinted.
It was ( 2nd hand ) more expensive than the very same bag she bought new obviously a couple of weeks later from the Hermes shop in the upmarket department store in her local city.
