Short hairstyles if you have thick puffy mushroomy hair

Hi, anyone here have a short hairstyle with the above type of hair? I was thinking of a 'bixie' cut, but think the layers may puff out?? My hair has a bit of wave to it and I like to scrunch and go, so nothing they require too much styling.

If you find out - please let me know. Every cut - one wash and I'm back to 'shroom.

That will go to mushroom worse than am ordinary bob because all the layers will mushroom separately at different lengths. Solutions I've found: full pixie, mullet/wolf cut or shave back and/or leaving the top long

Thanks @StamppotAndGravy , as I feared! Would this sort of thing be better....or still too layered? Not sure I'd suit an undercut or full pixie.

I had one dreaded mushroom, my hair is way too voluminous and puffy 😭
which is a shame but I’m too lazy for daily styling so I keep it longer now because I can just wash it and stick it up and out of the way.
i’m too disillusioned now to ever consider there might be a way forward!

I have super thick mushroom hair and apart from hairdressers disapproving of certain styles, no matter how I have my hair, even now I'm pretty grey (and very young to be) - my hair is my most complimented feature. Because it's so thick and really people all seem to wish they had thick hair!

So I would just say get whatever you want/that is convenient, embrace the mushroom and enjoy your lovely thick hair whilst it lasts!

What's mushroom hair please?

Thisthreadonly · 16/01/2024 23:36

I came to ask about my mushroom hair. I've been trying to style it better but a bit of humidity and it seems to "puff outward". But if styled by a hairdresser, it lasts longer before the mushroom.

Can this be solved by products? Are there lots of magic things I can put in my hair that helps?

I also wondered if the real problem is that I have wavy hair and I'm forcing it to look "slick' and silky. How do you embrace the wave?

Basically, I'm coming at the same question from a different angle. Is the trick to get the right cut? Or to know how to work with this type of hair to get best result?

I have that haircut approximately. This is what it looks like with semi-thick semi-curly hair without styling. Just occasionally all the curls go exactly right and I get a beautiful 30s style wave. It looks like your picture if I dry it. I think it will look really good with 2-3 inches of growth though which was the idea.

Disclaimer, I actually asked for a mushroom because it brings out the curls. The hairdresser have me exactly what I asked for which turned out to be not quite what I wanted :D

Can't see if anyone has replied to my previous query but what is mushroom hair?

Waitingfordoggo · 17/01/2024 21:30

@LondonLass61, I think basically thick hair (or lots of hair) that might have a bit of a wave/curl but doesn’t lie flat and is resistant to grooming! I have similar hair and keep it long. I’m not brave enough to try shorter styles because I fear looking like a mushroom.

Waitingfordoggo · 17/01/2024 21:30

Referred to as ‘mushroom hair’ because it has a tendency to travel outwards instead of lying flat.

It's when your head is shaped like a mushroom in a silhouette. Neck is a stalk then hair puffs out in a ball, normal with a sharp horizontal line just like the mushroom gills are.

Puddingpieplum · 17/01/2024 21:48

You just need a bloody amazing hairdresser who really understands hair, especially wavy / curly hair. So probably someone who works for herself / himself and is very artistic. Not someone in Toni and Guy.
I had wild huge hair. It was the bane of my life. I used to have keratin blow dries, fight the wave. Then I met my gorgeous hairdresser and she gave me a style that works with my hair that's straight / curly and wavy in different parts of one head.
Ask for recommendations.

LondonLass61 · 17/01/2024 23:42

Thanks - not heard that term before.

You are me, I literally saved that exact pic to add to my hair inspo album months ago!

I just had a dodgy cut, having asked for a short bob with slight layering (to avoid the solid triangle look), WITH PHOTOS, I have somehow ended up with too-short layers on top and some kind of Portuguese Man o' War mullety tentacles crap at the bottom. Am going back for an adjustment (to get what I originally asked for).

The only way to avoid the poofiness is to embrace the waves with styling product, or at least that's what I have found.

If your hair really is like mine then don't go for a pixie cut or you will look like Ed Miliband/Nicola Sturgeon.

AlltheFs · 17/01/2024 23:50

Only thing that works for mine is really long to drag it down.

Mine is so thick and wavy underneath it can stay damp after washing in a heated house for 2 days. It’s insane.

I’d love an actual style but I am too lazy to spend more than 3 mins on it and nothing a hairdresser does looks nice after it is washed and ignored by me.

I hoped it would fall out after pregnancy but it just got thicker. Bastard hair.

tumtitum · 17/01/2024 23:52

Honestly an undercut could change your life! I got one about two years ago, can now wash and go for the first time in my life without turning into a shroom. I wish I'd known this in my teenage years!

What products work?

I have similar hair- I describe it as independent! What helps with mine is having it thinned out. My hairdresser twists thin sections of my hair round and round and then makes tiny little cuts all the way down- much better than thinning scissors.
It definitely lays flatter but still has body- just not so much of it!
