Hairstyles for over 40s

I've made an appointment for a long LONG overdue cut. I do literally nothing with my hair, it has no style, it's just long. I don't even blow dry it most of the time, just let it dry on its own.
I'm heading towards my mid 40s and I'm just not convinced it suits me anymore, if it ever did. What would you do with it? I don't really want to colour it as I won't keep up with the maintenance.

your hair is beautiful
I recently went for a bob (same age)
it’s very short so I am going to grow it out to just above shoulder length but I feel more ‘put together’ with it

MillicentRogers · 13/01/2024 11:46

Your hair is lovely. Please don't cut it. Invest in a good brush and buy some elnett hair spray in a gentle strength and your hair will stay groomed throughout the day.

MajesticWhine · 13/01/2024 11:47

You hair is lovely. You have nothing to worry about. Just get a good trim or maybe some long subtle layers.

PoinsettiaLives · 13/01/2024 11:50

Just get a good trim with some long layers. Don’t cut it all off, it’s lovely. You don’t have to go short just because youre in your 40s.

AnchorWHAT · 13/01/2024 11:54

Its lovely and I have hair envy, I would try curls around the bottom lengths, I have a heatless curl band thats soft and once hair is wrapped on it I leave it all day or sleep init and get gorgeous soft curls with no heat damage.

NewYearNameChanger · 13/01/2024 11:57

Keep the length, and maybe get the ends cut off blunt. Or go for a shoulder length bob, but not a short one.

IamaPopof · 13/01/2024 11:59

Please don't get a bob !

AhBiscuits · 13/01/2024 12:02

Thanks everyone ☺️
Maybe I'll just get a good few inches off the length, as I think it's quite damaged, and a few long layers.

It's really lovely as it is! A bob certainly wouldn't be an improvement. Agree with the trim, long layers and trying heatless curls if you fancy a change suggestions.

LoreleiG · 13/01/2024 12:03

Your hair is lovely! Speaking from experience of not knowing what to do with long hair that hasn’t been cut for ages, I would get a decent trim with some shaping around the sides and keep it long. Then book in another trim for 12 weeks time and keep it up. And get some good shampoo and some products you like. Your hair obviously dries nicely naturally which I am jealous about! You could find a wet twist style on YouTube so it dries wavy if you fancy a change.

MrsRachelDanvers · 13/01/2024 13:15

I have to have short hair as mine goes straggly past chin length. If I had hair like yours, I’d cherish it. How about the latest Jennifer Anniston cut-a modern Rachel but longer and layering more subtle.you have great hair.

SuperPug · 13/01/2024 13:17

Definitely keep it long.
I’m generally not a fan of bobbed hair and think that the whole thing about cutting your hair off after a specific age is rubbish.

AmyTurtleRocks · 13/01/2024 13:27

Keep it long, just have a good trim. Lovey hair.

AhBiscuits · 14/01/2024 06:30

DH actually bought me a Dyson Airwrap for Christmas. A friend is having a big birthday party soon and I'd love to feel more dressed up than my usual efforts. I might have a play with it later, try adding some curls.

Yes agree. You have lovely hair so keep it and perhaps trimmed. Assume it looks lovely up as well.

Make the most of it!

Maddy70 · 14/01/2024 07:06

It needs shape. Haveva couple of inches off abd get sime shape around the front abd height at the crown.

WhereAreWeNow · 14/01/2024 08:43

I would keep it as it is. I've cut mine shorter but only because it now looks really straggly and not nice when I grow it long.

DuchessOfSausaage · 14/01/2024 09:00

Just have it trimmed. You could ask the hairdresser for suggested updos.
Your hair looks nice as it is.

If you have a blonde bob you tend to look like every one else with a blonde bob.

EffinMagicFairy · 14/01/2024 09:09

You have lovely hair, I’m older than you and regretting my bob years! Currently growing mine longer, enough to be able have wear it up occasionally, if this is for you, check out instagram as they have some very good tutorials on putting hair up that look really elegant, and not just shoving hair back in a band!

2chocolateoranges · 14/01/2024 09:14

I’m in my mid 40’s and have a few friends with hair like you and it still suits them.

personally my hair is quite fine and looks straggly if it’s longer than my shoulders so I tend to have a bob but between my chin and shoulders to avoid the “pulled through a hedge look”.

i also have a couple of friends in their 40s who have shorter pixie cuts,

we all have a style we like and suit.

PollyOrange · 14/01/2024 10:27

Your hair is beautiful and if mine were like that, I'd keep the length.
