Please help me dye my greys

I can’t pay salon prices every 3 or even 6 weeks so have to get better at touching my own roots up. I’m shockingly bad in that 1. I get dye on things in my bathroom (I hate the bathroom anyway so not too upsetting) 2. I have to wear old clothes and towel as otherwise I would ruin good clothing / towels
and 3. I try and follow the instructions but some of the greys don’t dye !! My hair is quite thick and the section on top of my head I find the hardest. I try parting my hair in several places and applying the dye to the roots but after a while all of the roots look saturated but then once it’s done washed and dried I will find odd missed bits 😭
please help I don’t want to have to practice 250 times or more before getting it right 🙏

Can you get a friend to help you?

WhereAreWeNow · 09/01/2024 18:23

What kind of dye are you using? Permanent or semi? How much grey is there?

DillDanding · 09/01/2024 18:34

Use a permanent dye, section your hair from the centre part using a tail comb. Or if using a box dye, use the nozzle of the bottle. Be methodical and part in 1cm sections. If I do mine at home, I get my husband to do the back.

Leave it on for far longer than the instructions state.

NewYear24 · 09/01/2024 18:35

I do mine every three weeks, I went on You Tube and leant how to do do it. I do also smudge in the colour a bit too to make sure I haven’t missed any bits.
I normally do my temples and parting every three weeks and then all over every 6 to 9 weeks.

I use a foam dye (John Frieda) to stop me making a mess everywhere. Plus leave in for ages longer than the pack says and old towels and clothes

School99 · 09/01/2024 19:05

Will leaving it on for longer potentially damage hair though ?

Will look at the foam hair dye thanks !

Not all hair dyes cover grey, but also grey hair has no pigment in it which is why some of your grey doesnt retain the dye

AcceptingTherapy · 09/01/2024 19:14

I dye mine in the bath, have a mirror on the side, pop it on (I use a proper dye brush and section from parting) then lay back for 20-30 mins development time and wash out.

Anjea · 09/01/2024 19:16

I don't leave mine on for longer. Just follow the instructions. The ten minute one is good for inbetween dyes

NewYear24 · 09/01/2024 19:17

I use Nice and Easy root dye, there’s no mess. The kit comes with just enough dye for your roots and includes a little brush to use. You only need to leave it on for 10 minutes as well.

Pancakefam · 09/01/2024 19:27

I've just given up dying my greys. It's a nightmare and no matter how often I dye them, I can always see roots peeping through in photos! I appreciate that doesn't answer your question, mind..

7catsisnotenough · 09/01/2024 19:58

What colour is your hair naturally @School99 ?

7catsisnotenough · 09/01/2024 19:58

Other than grey obviously!🤣

lol that made me laugh !
dark brown naturally. I used to have highlights for years but it made my hair too dry in the end. I would grow the grey but it’s in seemingly random patches and less than 30% overall

L’Oreal do a permanent colour root dye that comes in a tube with a little brush attached, I find that really good

Mirabai · 09/01/2024 23:43

L’Oréal Preference and Excellence work for me.

7catsisnotenough · 10/01/2024 10:24

@School99 my hair is very dark brown bar underneath my fringe (!) and a few random strands. I use Plantur 39 shampoo and conditioner in brown, it works a treat

MrsRachelDanvers · 10/01/2024 15:15

If your hair is only 30% grey, why not try a semi? They’re much easier to apply than permanent, shorter development time and you don’t get that line. Nice n easy gives a more natural look imo than Casting. I’ve been using ash brown for ages-the other browns get that dyed look.
