Is this such a bad idea?

OP posts:

Yes

ObliviousCoalmine · 04/01/2024 22:26

End of thread.

p2312 · 04/01/2024 23:06

Don't do it!

willsandnoodle · 05/01/2024 07:04

I had a dream I had a perm the other night, my hair looked like crispy noodles and snapped off 😂 perms are only good until your hair starts to grow, is that right? And super damaging.

OddityOddityOdd · 05/01/2024 07:07

If you are asking, you are too young to remember why they went out of fashion. Don't do it.

ditavonteesed · 05/01/2024 07:47

I had a perm a few years ago and I absolutely loved it. However the condition of my hair was so bad after a year I got rid, and by got rid I mean shaved my head.

babasaclover · 05/01/2024 08:03

A digital perm seems to look so good! I'd love one

NooNakedJacuzziness · 05/01/2024 08:08

I had one about 10 years ago - it grew out quite quickly and then it starts to look really weird. Stick with the curling wand!

NewyearNewyear2024 · 05/01/2024 08:10

I don’t know why they never came back in after everyone had one in the 80s.

Pugdogmom · 05/01/2024 08:19

There are very few hairdressers these days that are skilled in perms because they went out of fashion in the 90s so you might need to shop about.

Shudders remembering my 80s perm and candy floss hair...🤣

JeezJerry · 05/01/2024 08:28

Don't do it OP! Get yourself a decent curling wand! They never look as good as you imagine, and are really high maintenance.

BethDuttonsTwin · 05/01/2024 08:32

I had several perms in my youth, they would look horrendous for about three months and then relax into the most gorgeous waves as my hair grew. It was worth it for those waves tbh but l don’t think I could do the horrendous three months thing again.

Gnomegnomegnome · 05/01/2024 08:33

If you want to mess up the condition of your hair go for it!

Wictc · 05/01/2024 08:35

My mum has just had a loose perm. She has very fine hair. It looks good, but her hair is uncoloured. Do not do it if you colour your hair!!

Zoomzoomzoomzoom0 · 05/01/2024 08:37

Anyone recommend a curling wand for short ish hair?? One that won't break the bank.....

Mairzydotes · 05/01/2024 08:39

You might struggle to find a salon that offers perms. They aren't as common now so the stylists may have no experience in doing them .
They are also extremely time consuming and the salon could carry out a few cuts in the time it takes to do a perm .

If you find a salon that offers them , have a consultation.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 05/01/2024 08:47

Yes it’s a bad idea.

ChanelNo19EDT · 05/01/2024 08:53

I know somebody who home perms her hair at the root. So not a full on perm, just a bit of assistance. I used perming lotion to straighten my fringe once! It kinda worked.

catwithflowers · 05/01/2024 08:55

I had a loose perm about 8 years ago. My hair is very fine and it gave it a bit of body. I liked it at the time but it dropped pretty quickly as my hair is poker straight normally. I remember the days when you could get home perm kits 😂. My mum and I used to do each other's hair! I still remember the smell 🙈

I really want a perm!
Jinglebellrocked · 05/01/2024 08:58

I have a perm and colour my hair. Condition of my hair is perfect.
I had really dull straight hair that took me ages to straighten to beautiful wavy hair that always looks amazing. Do it!

NooNakedJacuzziness · 05/01/2024 09:03

Ha yes home perms in the 80s absolutely stank! My gran used to do mine with Polyfoam and rollers with little papers in between

SD1978 · 05/01/2024 09:08

Me too!!! And yes I made the mistake of one years ago, but the loose perms, Korean perm. Japanese perm, etc- so many more choices than the clusterfuck of a style I had in the early nineties........

Westfacing · 05/01/2024 09:11

In the 80s I had loads of perms - never did my hair any harm, but as a PP has said they are high maintenance, if you want to leave the house looking reasonably groomed!

I assume my current hairdresser is too young to have done many, if any, perms Smile

itsmyp4rty · 05/01/2024 09:25

Aren't they currently very popular with young lads in the North? Just remembering those two on last years BB. If that wasn't enough to put your off then nothing will.

PersephonePomegranate23 · 05/01/2024 09:33

I'm presuming OP means a loose, digital perm rather then going around looking like Angie Watts c1985 😂
