Twinsets!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 04/01/2024 14:21

Just watching Old Corrie on tv. I know, I've got covid, and I'm a bit bored.... Hayley Cropper is wearing a lilac-y twinset. I'm thinking to myself that it looks quite nice, and smart! Whatever happened to them? Do people still wear them? Am I just old, and raddled with covid distorted thinking?! Come and talk to Spongey about twinsets please!

I love them! Nigella is partial to a twin set - a scoop neck top with matching cardigan. I think she uses tape to tape the cardigan to her top so it follows the curves of her waist and boobs. I think it looks sexy in quite a classy way!

I've been looking for a genuine 1960s twinset since forever but typically only one of the pieces has survived. I may have to break my usual rule and start hunting online.

I'd also like one in clashy colours, which would mean buying two!

StrangeNew · 04/01/2024 14:56

Aha! I love twinsets, but tend to avoid the temptation as my shoulders are so broad. These are some of the places I think would be worth looking - new or pre-owned.

Well, if it's good enough for Nigella, all is not lost. Thanks for the links @StrangeNew Clashing twinsets is something I hadn't thought of @Floisme !

I like them, always look more elegant than mismatched tops.
you could get a jumper & cardigan in exactly the same shade from Woolovers as their colours tend to cross the styles.

EnfysPreseli · 04/01/2024 17:49

I have a few twinsets in merino wool from Uniqlo. Short sleeved jumpers and matching long sleeved cardigans in black, navy and dark red. They are from previous seasons though, and I must admit now that I no longer work in an office, I rarely wear the jumpers or use them as a twinset because it's either too warm for a wool top or too chilly for short sleeves. I don't think they've had the short sleeved versions of the jumper this year though. They are excellent quality, wash well on a hand wash setting and dry quickly on coat hangers. I usually wear a Uniqlo Airism or Heattech thin top underneath, which means they don't need to be washed as frequently as a top directly against your skin. I think that's probably why they still look like new.

Laura Ashley used to do great merino twin sets before everything went pear shaped.

Palava don't do twinsets as such but some of their knitwear can be put together as a twinset. This one has the pattern modified as a smaller version on the tank top but same colours.

I had a nice baby blue twinset from BHS - I miss BHS.

The obsession on MN by some posters about washing everything after one wear was a revelation for me. And completely contradicts the care instructions given by high end knitwear producers.

Floisme · 04/01/2024 18:17

Ooh I like some of those Palava clashes, thanks IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle.

The local Bluebanana used to do some with skull or spider motifs, but they always felt a bit synthetic-y, and I think they only sell the cardigans now.

Darklane · 04/01/2024 19:35

Would you believe I have two vintage ( ie ancient) M&S twin sets knitted in pure silk! V neck short sleeved jumper & matching V neck cardigan , fine knit. Back in the day when M&S sold really nice things in natural fibres, probably the 80s when I bought them, one set deep teal, other mid grey.

StrangeNew · 04/01/2024 19:59

They sound gorgeous, @Darklane. I can’t say I remember seeing those specific things, but 80s M&S was a great resource - I think I may have created the odd twinset from jumpers and cardigans from the men’s department. Worn iirc with leggings and ballet flats.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 04/01/2024 20:01

Thanks all. Loving that patchwork cardie. And I am envious of the M & S silk! Woolovers is a good shout. And Uniglo!

One more resource: lots of colours! Washable merino.

TheOGCCL · 05/01/2024 14:38

I suit a twin set as my bust is very disproportionate to my waist. I have a number of round neck cardigans but often find the jumpers too short (or rather my bust swallows up all the fabric) so I tend to find other tops that match.

I do really like the look and won’t be parting with my cardigans but although it’s kind of a classic I think it looks quite dated at the moment alongside the trend for looser shapes. Or perhaps more of a formal, office-y look.

Floisme · 05/01/2024 15:31

That's partly why I've been looking out for a 1960s one TheOGCCL - the fit is normally much looser (although if I find one, it'll probably be Bri Nylon Confused). The ones dating from the early noughties are more fitted and yeah, they look a bit off to me too.

crowgift · 10/07/2024 00:30

Not sure if it's bad protocol to revive a January thread in July but has anyone found any good twinsets recently - I have medical treatments where I need to have one arm out and like the idea of a twinset (rather than current mismatched baggy cardigan and uniqlo t-shirt). Probably in either cotton or cotton/silk or cashmere (though I probably can't stretch to luxury level)?
