Thinning hair

Looking for any advice how to sort out my thinning hair around my forehead as it seems to have got worse over last few years. I turn 44 at the end of the month.

Ferritin levels were 15 in June so no issues there. They were at 4 the year before so that may have initially contributed to it.

Does taking collagen actually work? I hate taking tablets but if it does work I will just have to make myself take them!

Collagen in powder form that you mix with your coffee / smoothie etc has no taste , so might be easier then tablets ?

I take it daily with my morning coffee...

Thanks. I never thought of the powdered stuff. Any recommendations? I have some marine collagen tablets but they are huge and only managed 3 days and gave up.

So i been having this (maybe since 2017) and my nails are so strong and grow fast , its good for joints as well ,

im sure will help with thinning hair , but id say consistency is the key , as long as you take it every day and you should see results after 3 months
( i think any collagen peptides powder will work same so you can just get any really ! )

Hope it helps :)

Biotin is what you need.

Was this a typo @Opsroto? Ferritin levels of 15 is very much an issue. It's generally thought that ferritin needs to be 70 or above for hair growth. 15 is VERY low.

I was going to ask the same. If the OP’s ferritin is only at 15 then this could well be the problem.

Thanks @MangoooGirl. I will have a look at this one!

I will google biotin too @DrunkenElephant . Thanks

@HundredMilesAnHour yes it was 15 in June. They didn’t think it was an issue as I don’t feel unwell with it and just said it was marginally low. I didn’t have any symptoms when it was at 4 either tbh. Maybe the hair thinning is something that might be caused by it though.

Biotin looks like it might be better for thinning hair rather than collagen. But need the collagen for my sagging face anyway 🙃.

Low ferritin is definitely contributing to your issue. Increasing your ferritin levels will help a lot more than biotin or collagen.

Just Google low ferritin and hair loss. 15 is very low for ferritin.

Thanks for your help @HundredMilesAnHour . I will go to a chemist tomorrow to see if I can buy anything to help.

@HundredMilesAnHour I was taking Ferrous Fumerate in 2022. This might be something similar. It’s definitely worth a try though so thank you. I feel my forehead is getting bigger by the day!

Ferrograd C was recommended to me by a friend who's a qualified nutritionist. It helped me increase my ferritin from 28 to 75.

15 is seriously very low. Your hair has no chance with that level. Of course there could be other issues at play too but the low ferritin definitely won't be helping!

Definitely agree. Mine is 60 and I'm trying to get it higher!
My plan has been ferritin level increase, the ordinary hair growth serum and I'm using collagen powder too

starsinthenightskies · 04/01/2024 10:26

Echoing previous posters - I started to notice hair loss when my ferritin was around 25.

It’s now back up to 50 and the hair shedding has stopped, but I’m trying to get it higher.

Hello again,

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who commented, as you were all right! Ferritin level was 5 and I have been started on some iron tablets. Hopefully having a new batch of hair coming in soon🥳

Phew! I'm keeping plodding on with mine and I take it with a fizzy vitamin c tablet
Been using the ordinary hair density serum too
