Silk Pillowcase - Do They Make a Difference?

I have decided to grow my hair out from a pixie to a bob, it’s very fine and get frizzy easily. I have read that silk is also good for wrinkles- aged 45, every little helps.

Can anyone say if sleeping on silk pillowcase indeed has improved their skin and hair?

Didn't make the slightest bit of difference to either for me and I hated the feel of it. Gave it away.

hartof · 31/12/2023 20:36

For hair yes! I used to wake up looking like Hagrid and with the silk pillowcase I don't. So this has stopped hair breakage around the front of my face. I don't really know if I've noticed any skin differences.

contempmuse · 31/12/2023 20:38

I find I don't get those creases you sometimes wake up with. It hasn't helped noticeably with hair, so I use a silk bonnet as well, which definitely does help.

I have a cheap satin pillowcase which does much the same job but the mulberry silk is nicer to sleep on.

FourEyesGood · 31/12/2023 20:40

I found it made no difference to my hair or skin. It always feels nice and cool, but there’s no discernible difference otherwise.

Panaa · 31/12/2023 20:41

Lots of people swear by them so I suppose it depends.

For wrinkles another option is those silicone forehead pads.
When mine stopped being sticky I peeled the sticky stuff off and just used the silicone pad straight, works amazingly!

I don't have wrinkles but would occasionally wake up with lines from how I slept and they prevented that.

You can get those silicone things for all parts of the face too.

Or some people swear by old fashioned frownies.

I find it helps my hair, I look presentable when I wake up with less knots if I use them opposed to currently with my toasty flannel pillow cases when I look like Winnie the Witch, it's all about friction I guess

You need to listen to Radio 4's Sliced Bread. They looked into the claims made about silk pillowcases. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001t31c

I've recently got a hilarious silk bonnet thing to wear at night. It's great on dry hair but last night, I washed my hair before bed, tucked it in the bonnet to dry overnight, and this morning it went BOOOOIIIING!! with crazy curls! Definitely going to do that again instead of spending a day air drying my hair.

HundredMilesAnHour · 31/12/2023 20:54

I don't know if it really makes a difference but a silk pillow feels lovely against your skin. And my hair is definitely smoother in the morning.

CanImakethisbetter · 31/12/2023 20:54

Yes.

i used to get breakage around my temple because side sleep and seem to really push my face into my pillow.

The temples grew out when I started using the silk wraps, then I moved to pillows and it continued to grow out.

My hair doesn’t get dry and frizzy overnight either. Nor do I wake up with marks on my face from the pillows. Also helped my crows feet.

I get the ones that are silk on one side and cotton on the other. Stops the pillows sliding round the bed and are cheaper

ChristmasinBurrRidge · 31/12/2023 20:59

Yes definitely but results are product dependent for me - Slip pillowcases are excellent, John Lewis ones are awful (but are a fraction of the price of Slip, so perhaps unsurprising)

Ilikealltings · 31/12/2023 21:07

To the torture. It most defo makes a difference

Sweetglossy · 31/12/2023 21:15

Gosh- been using them for yonks so don't remember the time without.

Oh, I do. I never not sleep on it more than 2 days in a row as I see my face dries out.

So, I now travel everywhere with it even when I went backpacking, it was the one luxury I travelled with.

But then I drink plenty of water and use kiehl's moisturiser (spency but cooling and lovely) and other kiehl's products. My skin looks 20 years younger. Have had countless acquaintances (women) asking the secret to my smooth, youthful and glowing skin. Even when I lose so much weight ( I maintain size 8 but have been size 6 too) i don't look pale like some women do.

However, I swear by cleansing and using a toner DAILY -best advice I was given. Recommended doing that twice a day, but I stuck to once a day as was too busy, and it works. I therefore very rarely wear make up- but you would think I am wearing it as skin is so even and healthy. When I haven't cleansed for say 4 days, I find I need make up. So, stuck with cleansing daily and even try twice a day most days these days as have more time, and couldn't be happier. I wear make up maybe 4 times a year- I just don't need it, which encourages me to keep cleansing, toner (both expensive products); daily 15 mins exercise/ stretches/ healthy eating and drinking lots of water. I also choose foods high in antioxidants to get rid of free-radicals.

But have never not sleep on my quality silk pillow case from White company, 2 days in a row.

One hotel we stayed in had really quality, smooth beddings, I ended up not using my silk pillow case as there was no need. Have encountered those sheets twice.

Also bought many bamboo pillow cases on my travels to Mauritius and that's their equivalent of silk. DH bought me satin ones with a label promising what silk pillows do and I also use those.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 31/12/2023 21:16

Curly hair, yes makes a difference I think , can’t wear a satin bonnet as I look like a proper idiot

contempmuse · 31/12/2023 21:35

Which cleanser and toner do you use? @Sweetglossy

NeverDropYourMooncup · 31/12/2023 21:37

I definitely think it's reduced frizz/breakage and my face looks less sharpei-like in the mornings. They always feel cool, too, which I really like.

I got the cheapest all silk ones from Amazon, as there's no need to pay extra for a brand.

Panaa · 31/12/2023 21:51

@Sweetglossy
What age are you?

I've nailed my skincare routine over the past couple of years and I'm obsessed with how nice my skin is. I've been told it looks like teenage skin and like I'm wearing make up. I'm only mid 30s though.

I never cleanse and tone though (but would occasionally use snail mucin as an essence instead of toner). I guess different things work for different people.

kiehl's products. They give you free samples too even if you go online. if you go to their shop- and make an appointment, a dermatologist looks at your skin (for free) and make recommendations.

I have a sensitive skin and don't do facials. I get some avocado masks from them to use instead.

I spend say, 150 to 200 TWICE a year, but I know what I need. Products are rich so just a tip of your finger is enough and if lasts for 6/7 months. During summer I use a variation with SPF.

However, their shampoo and conditioner don't work for my hair. So hair is Molton brown for 2 decades now.

I recall Kielh's dermatologist telling me: Always use a toner. Straight after showering and cleansing. Toner locks in your natural moisture which gets exposed (and diminished) after washing face_ it's why some people don't wash their faces too much. I try to use a cleanser instead of washing it, once a day- as in wash once a day and second time likely to just cleanse without washing.

I was arguing with him that I can cleanse and apply toner after work as after gym first this in the morning, it's a quick shower and run. He said no no no. And gave me a free 20 mil toner and 20 mil cleaner versions of my bigger bottles, that would fit in my small daily cosmetic bag to the gym. It stuck with me. I also avoid the sun- have huge hats like umbrellas!

So is your hair totally dry in morning with silk bonnet

My hair takes ages to dry when I wash it in the morning

NaughtybutNice77 · 31/12/2023 23:19

Get yourself a bonnet. I was very ill in bed once for 2 weeks...as in had a bucket at side of bed for loo. So weak l didn't wash or brush my hair. My daughter had to cut out a huge apple sided fuzz ball of knotted hair. She happened to tell her black friend who gave me a silk 'bonnet'. OK not glam but great for frizzy knotty or fragile hair. I'm quite particularly and I hardly noticed I'd got it on.
Of course for an even of romance I'd favour the silk pillowcases, just thought it was a cheaper way to try out yhe principle.

Brird · 01/01/2024 08:25

Not sure about hair, but silk pillowcases stopped the big creases in the side of my face (side sleeper). Haven't had a crease in years, which is great as the older I got the longer they were taking to disappear.

OverTheGrip · 01/01/2024 08:37

My silk pillowcase travels with me everywhere.

I have bought one for all female family members and a few friends

Coincidentally · 01/01/2024 08:41

Oooh - have used a silk pillowcase for years, but never heard of the bonnet till now -just purchased one on Amazon…

Coincidentally · 01/01/2024 08:43
