Stylish, comfy boots for walking many miles sightseeing?

Help!
I recently went on a trip to a city where we walked 40,000 steps over the course of the weekend. Had a fab time but…… ow.my.feet!
I had blisters on the bottom of my feet! I wore boots that I’ve worn lots of times for walking around a lot, but they clearly aren’t any good for this kind of walking. A friend has a pair of Dr Martens and says she swears by them. I tried a pair on but found them clunky and restrictive around my ankles (although only wore for a few minutes so feel free to tell me to persevere)

I want a pair that I can wear for sightseeing, comfy AND stylish so I feel smart going for meals etc while sightseeing. Hence not considering traditional walking boots.

Please can you recommend what you have that fits the brief above?
Thanks!

I live in my Sorel boots pretty much from October to March every year. After having just 1 pair for a couple of years, I now have 3. They're great as keep my feet warm (initial reason for purchase) but don't overheat, and they are comfy..I've even tested them out in Lapland.

For those suggesting Dr Martens, they did a give away with unique boots supporting everything "queer" and one of them had a depiction of a young woman with "top surgery" scars.

I was so disgusted by it I threw out my Dr Martens from the 90's and a newer pair.

If you don't care about this, you do you, but if you don't want to support any company that supports this child abusing, homophobic and misogynistic movement avoid Dr Martens from now on.

Goodness, so no company is allowed to show support to a minority group now.

MN brings all the transphobes to the yard.

Probably the same people that think they have to vote the Tory shitshow back in, because somehow the Tories understand, 'What a woman is.'

I swear by Clarks, never need breaking in, just wear and go.

I had a black pair like these last year, bought especially to go to a Budapest winter city break in case it snowed. They are amazingly comfy and I’m a bigger person so they got some heavy action! I walked miles, well over 10,000 steps a day and they’ve been great, if you want a cheaper option.

They're great and a good price @UrsulaBelle

UrsulaBelle · 06/01/2024 16:53

@FayCarew This thread has actually inspired me to buy them in the navy! My black ones are going strong but it’s nice to have a navy alternative.

Surprisingly, I got my mother some black waterproof Chuck Taylor All Star City Trek boots for her daily long walks and they’ve been a hit.

They blend in well with black clothing so can look smart and are reportedly extremely comfy with a thick sole.

I was also going to say the sturdier Converse or MTE Vans. I wear mine all day and have hiked a number of miles in them. The Vans are very flat though, which I love, but not everyone gets on with them.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/01/2024 17:13

I've got Converse platforms. The bouncy sole is lovely, but they start hurting my feet after the six mile mark.

Sleepyteach · 06/01/2024 19:04

I struggle with wearing the same shoes for two big days walking in a row. My fur lined DMs are the comfiest shoes I own, but I never want to put them on for a second day of a weekend away. We did Disneyworld last year and I took three pairs of comfy daytime shoes to give my feet some variety! (Tevas, walking trainers, flip flops)

QueSyrahSyrah · 06/01/2024 19:08

Same as the PP, I can't do two or more days of solid city walking in the same shoes, no matter how comfy they are. Even for a travelling light city break I have to have a pair of smarter boots and a pair of trainers / converse to alternate.

BlowingAway · 06/01/2024 19:51

Gabor Zumba are the most comfortable boots I've ever worn. As comfortable as trainers.

Mumaway · 06/01/2024 19:53

I have some chunky soled studded Chelsea boots from Zara that will go for miles. They are quite wide fitting so I have put a sheepskin insole in for added comfort and warmth. Lovely.

Gabor and Rieker make very comfortable shoes.

Goodness, so no company is allowed to show support to a minority group now.

Any company that supports or induces selfharming bullshit like cutting, purging, foot binding, female genital mutilation, eating disorders, breast binding or "top surgery" can go straight to hell.

I have no issues about expressing my disgust for this and warning other people to stay clear.

If you want to pretend that this about "supporting a minority group" to soothe your conscience or because you are ignorant you go right on ahead sweetheart.

QueSyrahSyrah · 07/01/2024 09:08

Agree with @Mirabai, when I take one pair of boots and one pair of trainers to alternate, the boots are Reiker. So comfortable and last for years.

Vargas · 12/01/2024 08:04

Really useful thread, I have the same issue re: city breaks and walking. I'm going to try the Moshulu boots which are in the sale at the moment. I went to Rome a few months ago and my feet were agony by the end of the trip!

ohtowinthelottery · 12/01/2024 08:22

In my experience it's not just the shoes/boots that are important but the type of socks are just as important. I wear Smartwool socks if I'm going to be walking a lot - I used to only wear them when hiking but now wear the Smartwool ankle socks with walking trainers even if I'm only sightseeing around a town/city. (Other brands of wool walking socks are available, I don't work for Smartwool!)

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 12/01/2024 08:41

If it is too cold for Birkenstock sandals (which I have worn for 38,000 steps in a day) then I go for Ariats. Lovely and supportive, hard-wearing, decent grip and waterproof, I have worn them on mountains and in cities. Lots of styles too, from long country boots, to Chelsea boots to trainer styles.

Birkenstock make boots now too but I haven't tried them yet.

willsandnoodle · 12/01/2024 08:58

I have these, redback ubok. I wear them all the time, with everything.
They're comfy straight away, and they have special soles to absorb shock so feet don't fatigue. They're also made in Australia, good quality and fair trade.

insidenumber4 · 12/01/2024 09:01

Hello! Might not quite be what you're looking for but I've had a pair of Blundstone Boots for the last 3 winters and I walk miles in them, they're pricey (I would never normally spend that much on a pair of boots!) But they have been so sturdy and comfortable, I really love them!

fernsandlilies · 12/01/2024 09:45

I agree, good socks make a huge difference.

I have hiking socks from 1000 Miles. I also like the thermal socks from Uniqlo, although they don’t have any strengthening over the heel/ ball of the foot, which is best for walking a lot, and I think they will wear out quickly.

Oh yeah, because thinking that telling a child their body is "wrong" is abusive, is transphobic. And thinking that men who have simply said they're women shouldn't be immediately allowed to get changed with teenage girls, is transphobic. And thinking that Mike Tyson shouldn't be able to fight a woman boxer if he says he's a woman, is transphobic.

This isn't working anymore, no one believes it.

I have several pairs of boots by Lanx.
They are amazing for walking and everyday wear. I have walked miles round cities in them and found them great.

I was going to say Lanx, too!
