Lanx or Solovair?

I want to get some decent boots, I do an office job but sometimes have to do site visits and need something comfortable warm and practical that I can wear with dresses or trousers. I need something lightweight that I can put orthotic insoles in and I am petite with size 6 feet so have avoided chunky boots in the past but I am fed up with boots that hurt my feet.

I have been looking at Lanx or Solovair, I quite like brogue styling and I love patent leather but not sure if patent is as long lasting as plain leather.

Any advice?

On looks alone I’d def go for Solovair (they’re a bit cooler than Lanx IMO, but then I’m a big fan of the original DM style). Can’t speak for the quality of Lanx but DH wears Solovair and swears by them, though they can take a while to wear in

I've bought and returned solovair boots, they looked a bit like the boots kids wear whilst in cadets! The ones I chose were simple back leather lace up so that may not have helped!

Have you looked at Grenson too? I've got 3 pairs all very lightweight and so comfy, I love them.

Appreciate they might be a bit more at the upper end of the budget though, worth checking the sales though..

I have these which I wear to the office with dresses. The Lanx and the Cheaney burgundy are both around 18 months old, both wearing well and comfortable from the get go.

I have Solovair and Lanx.
Lanx are head and shoulders above in quality and comfort. I have to put insoles in my Solovair as they are so hard and uncomfortable.
The leather is superior too. Despite having the same care, the Solovair leather has cracked.

I can only speak for Lanx. They are great quality. The size guide was spot on for me.

I love my Lanx boots. Amazing quality and very confortable and stylish. Am saving for another pair!

ChilliPB · 26/12/2023 23:46

Lanx are really beautifully made, haven’t tried Solovair though. I prefer the Lanx styles compared to Solovair. Also agree with PP that Grenson is worth a look - they currently have a sale on.

Those Lanx ones are just gorgeous.

LoveBeingAMum555 · 27/12/2023 08:59

Thank you, that's really helpful. The Lanx Chipping are more my style really and smarter for work but I absolutely love the Grenson Ella boots, although they are a bit outside my budget!

I thought the Lanx Chipping had smooth soles when I first looked at them which I wasn't keen on but looking at them again they do have a rubber sole for grip. I am leaning towards those unless I can justify the cost of the Grenson ones.

I can only speak for Lanx, live quite near their shop attached to the factory.
They’re well made, good quality, nice styles but I have to qualify that with the fact that only my DH has had shoes/ boots from there, bought after trying on in the shop, & every pair has rubbed his feet raw with blisters for months till broken in.
I was going to buy some but after his experience I’ve bought two pairs of Doc Martens which have been bliss to wear from the start.

Mine was the other way round.

Lanx Chipping wearable and comfortable from day one; Docs - never managed to get them to be wearable and gave them away.

I can only speak about Solovairs and I have several pairs.
They look a lot like DMs but the quality is far superior.

Am tempted to try Lanx but only have one pair of feet and no space for more shoes.

KirstenBlest · 27/12/2023 14:27

What's the sizing like on the Lanx?

What's the sizing like on the Lanx?

I'm a standard size, standard width 4 or a 4.5 depending on the shoe style and brand. I took a 4.5 and that comfortably allows for thick socks or very thick opaque thermal tights.

I've just looked at the Grenson Ella - that's a boot of beauty.

KirstenBlest · 27/12/2023 14:36

Thanks. Might look out for pre-loved ones.

Good job I don't like brogues on me Smile

Couperi · 27/12/2023 16:22

These opinions are interesting. I own a couple of pairs of Lanx and have been thinking about buying some Solovairs. The Lanx are OK but I much prefer my Grensons. I was hoping Solovair would be better quality.

QS888 · 27/12/2023 16:36

I also have Lanx - two weeks to wear in, along with a boot expander, but now they are fabulous. Highly recommend and I am now looking at a second pair. I bought the Dinkley boots. I stayed with my actual shoe size and the boot expander tweaked them so they are exactly right. Highly recommended.

Thanks so much particularly @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle for the photo. I have ordered the Lanx Chipping and I will report back to let you know how I get on!
