How do you keep looking young ?

doriangraybutimthepaintingintheattic · 24/12/2023 22:39

I have seen my mum for Christmas and although she is on the tip of 60, she looks 100. Her personality is golden, the kindest woman you would ever meet. Her face wears the years of love, happiness and wisdom like jewellery. She is beauty and kindness personified. However, The only liquid to pass her lips is tea or wine. I don't think skin care or moisturisers are in her vocabulary and she's blind but refuses to wear glasses so her face is permanently scrunched up in a squint (when it isn't her skin seems to think it still is) I hope that doesn't sound too harsh.

I'm am noticing the same thing happen to my face, the problem areas appear to be the same. Under my eyes is flat and crinkled. Despite a reasonable water intake, day moisturiser and smotherings at night, if you were to lift that skin it would just stay there. My forehead is ravaged with thick lines where I spend my day in disdain and the usual crows feet.

So my question, what the hell can I do to keep me looking young? I'm 38 and I need to reduce the speed at which this is coming at me!

I'm thinking
Water
Eat healthy
No 7 creams
Face rollers
Botox?

Surely your mum is a living example of how it doesn’t really matter?

doriangraybutimthepaintingintheattic · 24/12/2023 22:47

Just to be clear, the reason I mention my mum is that some of it is lifestyle but from seeing we have the same problem areas, I think it's genetic too. My intention is ti be factual.

SPF 50 every day. All year. For forever. Wear a hat in the summer when outside. Never get sunburnt again.

I find it impossible to believe you look as you describe at 38. I have never seen anyone as young as you have a forehead ravaged with deep lines

I think your comments about your mum are really unkind, masked in apparently complimentary terms. I really doubt your 60 year old mum looks 100.

In terms of what you can do, yes, SPF 50, a good skincare routine & generally eating well - but you know that. If you're very focused on it, there are obviously treatments you can have but honestly, just being happy in yourself is enough.

What’s the cause of all this disdain? Do you work with idiots?

I've actually not had Botox for years but considering it again (am 39) but I use tretinoin from skin and me and it's made a huge difference to my skin

😂 kind of. I drive for a living and see things that make me pull a face and an hour will pass and I'll realise my face has not moved or that my forehead lines are heavy set because I have been pulling that face. I can sort of iron them out at the minute and when I wake up they are less so I think it's the disdain.

I've seen a few social media posts re skin boosters that are injected. Have you tried this? I was assuming it was similar to fat dissolving injections and a waste of money but would love to hear anything otherwise.

No or low alcohol
Low sugar
Tretinoin
Vitamin C (on skin)
Judicial botox
The right haircut
Minimal make up
Sleep
HRT
SPF

I see collagen and LED masks mentioned on here but haven’t tried either myself.

WillYouPutYourCoatOn · 24/12/2023 23:08

What is tretinoin? Is it the same as a skin booster?

Would also love to know what the LED masks are supposed to do and what people's experience is.

A lot of it is genetics but your habits are powerful. Alcohol is extremely aging, as well as smoking and being dehydrated. I've been wearing large sunglasses since I was a child to avoid wrinkles. I read women's magazines a lot 😂 It works, I'm 42 and have zero wrinkles and I look like I'm in my 20's. Again, a lot of that is genetics, I haven't gained weight and the other women in my family also looked young, people would often think my mother was my sister. I get the same comments now with my kids, people asking where our parents are, haha. I also try to stay out of the sun or use mineral sunscreen (you can get makeup with built in mineral sunscreen now). I got a lot of sunburns over the years though, so now I use a lot of skincare both homemade and storebought that help with fading sun spots. I think they are marketed as "brightening" and not the same as skin lightening creams which I'm very against. I take a lot of supplements as well and very rarely eat meat. Alcohol and sun are probably the most aging things though. Some makeup tips to appear younger while you are working on your skin is to use dewy-look foundation with blush applied at the apples of your cheeks, with mascara and lipgloss. I rarely do anything else and add some moisturizer to the foundation to make it more sheer. Matte is very trendy but it's aging. So is the "buccal fat removal" look, those hollows are indicative of the elderly. So go for natural, healthy and glowing. I don't wear makeup often but when I do this it makes me feel great, like if I need a little self esteem boost.

I saw someone on TT last night saying that any red light will be effective if you sit under it, you don’t need to spend £££ on a fancy mask.

toomanyleggings · 24/12/2023 23:18

I’m 39 and have quite regular Botox. I can’t use tret but most people are fine with it

Spf 50 daily, and get a tretinoin subscription from dermatica or skin & me. I'm 39 and I've been using tretinoin (a prescription only skincare) for 2.5 years and it's transformed my skin. As it's prescription only in the uk you can get a script from those websites I mention where they send a monthly bottle out. Or if you go on holiday to turkey or Spain you can buy over the counter in a pharmacy.

And a little Botox to soften deep lines if you have them. I have it sporadically and have softened my lines massively. I used to Squint out of habit and now I don't anymore.

suki1964 · 24/12/2023 23:31

Aged 60 I dont have crows feet not lines ravaged in my forehead

Most people I meet in my work are surprised to hear Im 60, one very kind ( or very blind lass said no more then 50 lol )

Sure I went grey at 20 though :)

Only just needing to use moisturiser regularly since the menopause - no HRT

also No botox or any other intervention

Sunscreen and sunglasses has been the height of it

Sure my neck and arms give my age away, but I dress in a way they arent on show to all and sundry and my topless sunbathing days are long gone

Guess Im growing old gracefully

I also think that Im pickled, from the inside out, I drink, and am an ex smoker :)

The sun really is the most damaging to skin
