How do you keep looking young ?

I have seen my mum for Christmas and although she is on the tip of 60, she looks 100. Her personality is golden, the kindest woman you would ever meet. Her face wears the years of love, happiness and wisdom like jewellery. She is beauty and kindness personified. However, The only liquid to pass her lips is tea or wine. I don't think skin care or moisturisers are in her vocabulary and she's blind but refuses to wear glasses so her face is permanently scrunched up in a squint (when it isn't her skin seems to think it still is) I hope that doesn't sound too harsh.

I'm am noticing the same thing happen to my face, the problem areas appear to be the same. Under my eyes is flat and crinkled. Despite a reasonable water intake, day moisturiser and smotherings at night, if you were to lift that skin it would just stay there. My forehead is ravaged with thick lines where I spend my day in disdain and the usual crows feet.

So my question, what the hell can I do to keep me looking young? I'm 38 and I need to reduce the speed at which this is coming at me!

I'm thinking
Water
Eat healthy
No 7 creams
Face rollers
Botox?

I don't drink at all but to me two glasses of wine a week is low alcohol.

Happy Christmas all!

I haven't read the responses in full or done any research based on but this is my ravaged forehead. First thing (ish) in the morning so before the disdain of the day.

Can it be saved?

@doriangraybutimthepaintingintheattic
Facetaping. Doesn’t have to be fancy tape, just use micropore tape. My deep 11’s are erased by morning when I tape overnight. Sure, it doesn’t last all day, but I figure I’m preventing them getting too much worse, which they would do without the tape.

We asked a derm if TikTok's viral forehead taping trend can really prevent wrinkles

We spoke to a pro to get all the facts

I quit drinking and smoking 5 years ago and can see the benefits now. My skin is very clear, fresh and smooth. I do have lines and texture change but I'm not a doll and am happy to age, just not prematurely. I also drink a lot of water and use factor 30 every day of the year except the summer, when it's 50. Night cream every night. I've had a relatively easy life too which I'd say helps.

Andylippy1 · 25/12/2023 21:13

Yes totally

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 25/12/2023 21:14

Little sugar or booze, exercise, Botox

Andylippy1 · 25/12/2023 21:14

Genetics
Hrt
Spf

Spf, water and hrt

I think spf is really important and never too late to start. My sister lives in Australia and her skin has aged much quicker than mine, this could also be genetics thought as she takes more after my mum and I do my dad. I also use Tretinoin 5 out of 7 days. I use skin&me, which is expensive but I do feel like it works.
You can use the code below to try a month for free jusr £3.50 p&p although you generally don't see results for about 3 months. I use boots No7 moisture mask the 2 nights I'm not using skin&me and leave it on over night.

Yes. The lines won't go fully esp after your first treatment but can be softened alot and stopped from getting worse with regular botox treatments. I would also recommend a course of microneedling as well to improve the overall quality of the skin.

tret is the only thing that works and the only thing I use. I am in my 50s and have zero wrinkles. It's a lifechanger.

Got to agree with this. Early tret use = no wrinkles.

Milliemoos5 · 26/12/2023 14:11

I have a highly successful skin clinician (I think that’s a title?!) as a friend. She is adamant that the overwhelming factor to good skin is genetics, followed by protection from the sun.

im in my mid 40s snd several of my friends are at the age where they are starting to use Botox (i personally am too scared to do it!) but they still smoke like chimneys, use sun beds and drink loads of alcohol so seems a bit pointless 🤷‍♀️ and their skin is invariably bad. So I would say the healthy lifestyle defo goes before any Botox or anything else !

By not worrying about aging. You can look good at any age. It's ridiculous to try and attempt to stay forever young, that's for the young, grow up and embrace the changes,

Some people die before they get so much of a wrinkle, they would love priverlege of growing older.

This is very true. I'm 43 and I look young. Mainly (I think) because I'm autistic and don't move my face much. But at the end of the day I'm still 43, so there is no point in prancing about like I'm 25. It's my children's turn now.

KeeeeeepDancing · 26/12/2023 18:00

OP do you wear SPF every day on your face?
Your forehead is perfectly normal for a white person who hasn't worn sunscreen or a hat & has had sun tans in the summer.

Mirrormeback · 26/12/2023 18:20

My DM is 80 and looks much younger

I think it's because she has high cheekbones and has worn make up every day of her adult life which has helped prevent sun damage

I'm in my 50s and don't have any wrinkles yet and it's probably for the same reason.

I have been using retinol though for the last 8 years or so and have a decent skin care regime

InAMess2023 · 26/12/2023 18:23
  • Good skincare regime
  • Eating healthily - but everything in moderation, I don't deny myself if I'm craving something... that includes alcohol
  • Good sleep routine
  • Pilates, ballet and 5k walk/runs

Oh and a boob job and Botox (best thing I ever did!). I'm almost 40 yet occasionally still get asked for ID. I do work damn hard for it though

I used to wear sun block spf50 under my foundation as I used to get huge freckles but then I couldn't find anywhere that sold the "block" form I was buying so I stopped. I don't tan at all and barely burn but I'll admit I do need to pick up that habit again.

@Howtonamechange sorry I meant similar to fat loss injections in that they are not very effective. There are some companies who advertise near me but a lot are from their garage which is not by itself bad but I want the best I can afford.

Thank you for your post. It was very informative.

Drink loads of water. Get as much sleep as possible. Eat loads of vitamin enriched food and fatty fish. stay out of the sun, wear a hat and spf all year round. Find a good day and night skin care routine with plenty of serums and makeup that isn't too heavy. Check out beauty and the boutique on instragram. There are loads of age diffiing tips on there.

DelilahBucket · 26/12/2023 18:47

Genetics is a huge factor. Second to that is sun damage.
My mum had fabulous skin, looked years younger than her age, embraced her pale skin with daily SPF and she didn't smoke or drink much alcohol. Then she started using a sunbed in her 60's and it caused her to age visibly at a rate of knots.
The third most important factor is sleep. You need a decent amount of quality sleep every night.

Petrine · 26/12/2023 18:50

I’m 68 and have virtually no wrinkles. I do have a few lines developing around my upper lip but that’s all. I’ve never had Botox and my skin care routine is simply to cleanse thoroughly and use Nivea cream. I use the thick stuff in the blue tin at night and Nivea soft during the day. I have a good diet and exercise every day. My childhood was spent abroad in very hot climates, no sunscreen, though I did have a hat. We just used calamine lotion on the burnt bits 😳. I can’t even say I have good sleep as I’m a lifelong insomniac.

As others have said, genetics plays a huge part I’ve certainly done very little in the way of self-care. It’s down to luck.

doriangraybutimthepaintingintheattic · 26/12/2023 18:51

Thanks so much everyone. I've read every post and there's some clear winners here.

I think my mum solely looks as old because she doesn't take any care and seems to scrunch her face up more than the average person. We used to joke I would never get wrinkles because I'm so miserable (I used to tell her not to smile so "big") and now she laughs that I could have been less miserable.

I don't mind being old and looking old but I want to look younger than my years to a degree and I can see those changes need to start now.

I eat rubbish, don't drink all week and binge on a weekend, I do cardio but my cardio fitness is sickeningly poor and I'm fat. Looks like it's new year, new me 😴

Missed a huge point. Solely looks as old because her mum looks the same age (actually has loads less wrinkles) and she's 30 years older but uses Nivea soft and doesn't smoke/drink/eat badly

My aunt recently had a fall. She is 70.

When I was in hospital with her, every health care professional came in and expected a frail old woman. She actually looks about 50. They kept look confused when they came in.

My dad is the same (not related aunty is my mums sister). No one could believe he was my dad.

My mum and 2 of her other sisters aged badly and her mum (my Nana did) but 2 of Nanas sisters are still going strong at 100 and don’t look it.

The one thing they all have in common is that they are active and a healthy weight. Don’t smoke. Drink very little and eat healthy. I have started following their example. They all have a very similar mindset. They are all going at heart. Dad went to India back packing this year because he fancied it. My auntie travels 5 or 6 times a year. Throws a party for any reason and general just enjoys life.

I need to lose weight to get where they are thigh. It’s slowly coming off.

My mum was very inactive and drank quite a lot, aged and then passed away at 66. My Nana was the same. She didn’t drink but smoked and looked far older than her sisters and died over 20 years ago.

On top of adapting their lifestyle, I have a fairly rigorous skin care regime that focuses on hydration. Also do a Korean sheet mask once a week and use cooling eye patches 4 times a week. I use a mixture of Korean/ Japanese and western skin care. Depending o. What my skins needs when I order.

I can’t say, I think I look very much younger than my 41 years but people are always very shocked when they find out my daughter is 20 and at university as they tend to think I am mid 30s. My skin is good and has no lines of my face is relaxed.
