Mexico wardrobe

Hi all
I feel silly asking but it’s a holiday of a lifetime and I actually want to feel good for once.
off to Mexico in January, and I have no idea what to wear. In summer I usually just wear denim shorts and t shirts.
Id like to have a nicer wardrobe this trip, to feel like I fit in but do not know where to start.
Does anyone have any tips on where to start? I’m size 12/14 and 5ft 4 - like my legs, not keen on upper arms.
Thanks

what kind of holiday goer are you?

beach / pool
or
more active

StonwEd · 23/12/2023 09:17

Good point! Active! We’ll mostly be exploring and taking day trips. Of course we’ll hit the beach but that won’t be the bulk of the trip

How lovely OP! I went to Mexico in February and had an amazing time.

I always take earrings (not the most expensive pair as I tend to lose things!) as I find this makes me look instantly more put together.

Also, I'd recommend a midi dress that could be dressed up or down. I bought this one earlier this year and love it:

Don't forget warm things - I was so glad I brought my fleece (despite blazing heat during the day, Mexico city was so cold early in the morning). Lightweight jeans were useful too.

My main staple was linen/cotton trousers e.g. something like this:

Other bits: sun hat, sunglasses, bikini, tankini (for less confident days), beach coverup/tunic, leggings, cardigans/coverup, vest tops, havaianas, smart pumps/sandals, trainers (or hiking trainers).

Love Mexico! Where are you going/staying? Most places are pretty casual.

StonwEd · 24/12/2023 10:24

We’re not doing AI or anything like that, staying in more obscure airbnbs in cancun and tulum. I’m so excited but just don’t want to look a state 😭 I’m 44 so you’d think I’d have a grip by now but although I’ve been all over Europe and am well versed in holidays I’ I’ve somehow never been anywhere like this.
Confessed my worries to hubby after a few drinks last night and he reassured me that whatever I wear I’ll be gorgeous (lies but thanks darling) but I still want to dazzle a bit, even if it is on hiking days. I see women, natural adventurers looking so put together and I’ll never understand how they do it.
Earrings is a great shout, love earrings and wear them every day for the reason mentioned.
I’ll look at the links above thank you, later though, it’s bloody Xmas eve and I’m not ready!!

Good luck OP!

If it isn't on your day trip list already, it might be worth adding Isla Mujeres (a quick ferry ride from Cancun). Really enjoyed my time there

StonwEd · 28/12/2023 10:14

Yes I was looking at day trips there. Did you book before you went?

I decided to skip Cancun completely and went straight from Cancun airport to Isla Mujeres. I didn't book the ferry in advance, but already had accommodation booked on the island. This was 8 years ago though!
