Temporary dye for grey hair

I've grown out my grey - it's about 80% grey now I guess. Used to be v dark brown. Mostly much prefer it to my badgery days but do get a bit bored sometimes and hanker after a change. I use Scott Cornwall shades a lot which are really good but subtle. Is there anything else? Must be a mask which totally washes out and doesn't lift the shade or permanently stain. I'm surprised there aren't more mask-colour products marketed at grey hair.

If you want bright colours I’ve used Revolution on my white hair (pinks, reds and purples) and they haven’t stained. I haven’t found any wash out dyes in natural colours yet. I’d like a black one, but I’ve only seen semi permanent, which is basically permanent! It doesn’t wash out at all.

At the mo I'm more after natural colours, but might change my mind at some point and look at purple, so good to know, thanks!😁

I quite fancy mushroom blonde (a very cool, slightly mauvey mid to light brown). Or a dark, slightly bluey slate grey.

Would love to go dark again (without the badger stripe) but a wash out dark brown might be a quest too far.

Is a toner what you need?
I'm not exactly sure how a toner is different from any other sort of dye, but a hairdresser suggested that I could use one... if anyone knows do please shine a light on this! I have seen this sort of thing - it says its for for blonde hair but I wonder if it could be used on grey.

I use Plantur39 Brown and it dyes my dark greys to dark brown and my light greys to blonde. Hairdressers impressed and says I have what they aim for when they do highlights!

It washes out in a regular shampo or two.

I've tried a variety of toners in great pastel colours and none of them work in grey hair. I've investigated this and apparently you need to use peroxide as the toner doesn't "take" on virgin grey hair or even white hair. The only temp colour you can get easily is the blue - is the colour you get if you leave a purple shampoo on for half an hour.

A dark temp hair dye on hair that's predominantly grey will take on a brassy tone particularly under strong light or electric light. It's the white hairs which gives this tone. I've investigated this extensively and my dislike of this brassyness was the reason I gave up dying my hair. I even got an expensive hairdresser to give me the formula he used on my £250 dye job and bought the dyes at Sallys. But I still didn't like it. It's a professional job if you've got more than 50% grey, IMO. and that is time and money.
