Arran Jumper - Help Needed

EdinaMonsoon · 17/12/2023 11:16

Looking to buy DH an Arran crewneck jumper for Christmas. Looking for the real deal rather than a fashion brand, ideally. I've done a few searches and there are lots of companies but not sure where to start and which are decent quality.

Any recommendations?

Not concerned about budget at this point, as long as it's a high quality, durable piece.

Berties of bay ? They are in robin hoods bay (near Whitby). Have online as well I think

https://www.omaille.com/product-category/aran-sweaters/ If by real deal you mean traditional methods and knitted by hand, then I'd normally recommend this Galway business but probably no good now? I think it's to order. They are highly respected and good quality.

https://aranwoollenmills.com/en-gb Realistic and safe choice, AWM. I think they sell handmade items sometimes but most are machine. Kids jumpers are good, don't see why adults wouldn't be.

House of Bruar

They're really bloody hot to wear indoors, I'm in the SE and have one but can hardly wear it. If you're up in the north house of briar is good but m and s have copies that are nice at the moment and not so woolly

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Yes I did think that they would be very warm. However, DH does lots of walking/outdoor activities and has a Swiss variation of an Arran that is around 25 years old now but still looks new and he loves because of the warmth (and the fact that it was one of the last gifts from his mother before she passed). He wants that level of quality again so I think I will go ahead. Thanks again!

My DH has one from woolovers.com. I think they still do them and it's definitely a good company to order from.

I love my Bertie’s of Bay jumper as mentioned by @Forestdweller11 - it’s a little itchy when you first put it on (that might just be my skin and wool though) but incredibly warm. Wore mine loads during covid when all socialising was outdoors and have also worn it up and down mountains in Canada. Love it so much I ended up treating myself to another…

I love an Aran jumper - they are very warm! They last for ever, too. I wear my late stepdad's, which was hand-knitted for him in 1972.
