What do you do about facial hair?

I'm 38 and going though early menopause which has brought with it lots of unpleasantness, but one of the things that's really knocking my confidence is facial hair. I have developed wispy, almost white hairs on my chin, along my jawline and my upper lip. There's too many to tweeze them out individually, it's more like downy fluff than hairs you can pull out although I do seem to get the occasional long one! There's no point bleaching as the hair is already very light. I've thought about threading but it's tricky for me to get out to appointments due to my working hours and childcare. Does anyone have any at-home, DIY solutions they would be willing to share?

Just googled it, looks promising but is this really any different to shaving? I have thought about shaving but scared the hair will grow back thicker and darker!

It will feel thicker because it’s stubble (but as you are shaving it off it won’t matter) it certainly won’t be darker.

I don't understand why people say that shaving doesn't make hairs grow back thicker. My leg hairs are now hideously thick after 35 years of shaving, they definitely weren't like that when I started. I would avoid shaving your face OP. I also now know a few old (70+) ladies who have manly moustaches and beards which I assume is a result of shaving when they were younger

It's not the shaving that has caused that. I got hairier with each pregnancy. Menopause seems to have reduced the leg hairiness somewhat but brought about face hairiness. The older women with facial hair are presumably that way as a result of hormones.

If you think about it, shaving is no different to cutting hair. Cutting hair doesn't make it grow back thicker.

Am I missing a picture or a link? Definitely sounds interesting, whatever it is.

Sorry - I was replying to the post directly above, but didn't quote it! It's the flawless thingy, that quite a few people have also endorsed since 😁

Run a new, dry Bic over your dry face once a week. Simples!

RudsyFarmer · 17/12/2023 11:09

I can’t do anything that pulls the hairs out from the roots as I then get lots of spots. I had one of the small electric hair removers that have been linked but it stopped working 🥴

The worst thing about this stage of life is your eyesight goes alongside the hairs growing. So you can’t even see the fuckers. I’m on HRT and I think right now I don’t really have a hair issue. However I might be wrong and just can’t see them! I’d like to be doing something to make sure.

One of these springy things is great. Super cheap and easy.

I use one of those for the light downy hair on my chin, jowls but I struggle with my top lip as it hurts a bit too much. Also the hair there is darker and thicker than the downy fluff.

The odd dark hair on my chin I pluck, my top lip I trim really short and then use my lumea.

Haven’t read the whole thread but this is the answer: Facial Hair Remover - Spring Epilator Tool for Quick Hair Removal - Effective Threading Alternative amzn.eu/d/eY9BQiE cheap as chips and perfect results

…But don’t thank me for farking up the link Hmm

foodtoorder · 17/12/2023 11:23

Dermaplaning but depends on how quick hair growth is.

Yes, once you get the hang of it, very easy and efficient.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 17/12/2023 13:36

I hope this thread has scotched the shaving makes hair grow back thicker myth but is there any evidence that the spring epilator/ Braun epilator systems which remove hair from the root might have the opposite effect?

That's the methods I use for peach fuzz and over maybe 3 years there's far less of it. Is it possible that regular use of these methods has damaged the roots? The alternative is that it's yet more ageing hormonal changes and/ or an unexpected side effect of 2 long term medications, but there's no reports for this for either medication.

Please feel free to say I'm talking nonsense if you are knowledgeable about this.

neverbeenskiing · 17/12/2023 13:43

Thank you for all your responses. Ok so I'm now torn between

The Hollywood Browzer
The springy thing
The Braun face spa epilator

Another joy of menopause is that my skin is more sensitive and I've started getting spots again for the first time in many years. Does anyone know if any of these methods more likely to cause spots?

I'd never heard of the Hollywood Browzer.

I've used the other 2. Neither caused spots. I get spots from time to time so wouldn't use either when I had an outbreak but if skin was ok before I used them there was no issues.

The Braun does the same thing but electronically, more quickly and more expensively than the springy thing so maybe try the springy thing first as it's so cheap?

5PurpleDinosaurs · 17/12/2023 13:53

I shave. Have for years. I use shaving cream and a ladies razor. I plan to try laser removal this coming year.

Amazingpyjamas · 17/12/2023 14:10

The spring thing is amazing. I am too hairy just to shave as I feel my stubble would show! I spring every day then tweeze the odd miss and shave off the peach fuzz a couple of times a week. It takes a few seconds a day - it’s so easy and effective there is no point faffing with anything else.

Get skinsndnme or dermatitica to sort your spots (and lines). If you use my link the first month is £3.50 - my skin looks better than ever (for me!).

Oh and the menopause spots just got worse for me until I sorted them. The spring never caused problems but sugaring and waxing did.

Your thanks is generous - the code gives me a discount too, I think, but I started after using one on here too and it has been a game changer! I really wish I had found it years ago.
As for the springs I bought a five pack so I am never without!!

The springy thing and epilator both gave me spots. Dermaplaner ok but can be too much for my sensitive skin. Best for me is one of the little round electric shavers.

pickledandpuzzled · 17/12/2023 16:08

I can’t use the dermatica, it upsets my hands.

Spring and any kind of plucking gives me spots. Are your spots related to ingrowing hairs?

I have to shave. Any plucking causes spots where the hairs try and get back through- even with the dermatica stuff. I honestly think shaving is the way, after trying hard with other things as a matter of principle 😂

EnjoyTheMushrooms · 17/12/2023 16:10

I have the Tweeserman facial/eyebrow razor (with blades you can switch out once they go dull.)

I run it over a few times a week.

been shaving for the best part of 20 years, never once grown back thicker.

Nomooplease · 17/12/2023 16:40

I use a bikini epilator

Flipflops123 · 17/12/2023 16:56
