What do you do about facial hair?

I'm 38 and going though early menopause which has brought with it lots of unpleasantness, but one of the things that's really knocking my confidence is facial hair. I have developed wispy, almost white hairs on my chin, along my jawline and my upper lip. There's too many to tweeze them out individually, it's more like downy fluff than hairs you can pull out although I do seem to get the occasional long one! There's no point bleaching as the hair is already very light. I've thought about threading but it's tricky for me to get out to appointments due to my working hours and childcare. Does anyone have any at-home, DIY solutions they would be willing to share?

I use the epilator I use on my legs with some Acnecide for keeping it clean afterwards.

I go to a beauty salon every 6 weeks , waxing / sugaring on top lip , chin , underarm ,
I tweeze the odd one I see in between visits
Have never found a DIY version that’s as efficient

I do this too.

Applerumleandcustard · 16/12/2023 22:26

@LadyEloise1 I’m not sure of the difference ( apart from sugaring is made from some sort of sugar paste as opposed to wax ) personally I prefer sugaring , it’s a bit gentler

This looks really good. Does it work well on lighter hairs? So many solutions seem to only be effective for dark hair.

It works really well on all hair. It stings a bit.

Don't use the facial wash option tho'. It will ruin it.

Does anyone use the finishing touch face thing? Any good?

I bought one of these yesterday (on offer in Boots at the moment). Whipped off the peach fuzz in no time. My dream would be not to have to pluck the stubborn thick ones on my chin/neck so will see if it gets close enough that I can't feel them. I only did the fuzz initially as I wanted to check it wasn't going to irritate... which I didn't.

MissyB1 · 17/12/2023 07:39

I tweezer about twice a week, not the white fuzzy stuff - I would be there for days doing that! I just tweezer the dark wiry ones.

Honestly the whole 'growing back' thing seems to be a myth, for me anyway.

You can get little face razors in Tesco or anywhere, but I just use a normal one and it's fine.

Yes it's complete myth, why would the way you remove hair change its colour and consistency?!?!

I use the little blades you can get, easy peasy and cheap too.

In fact the myth was probably spread by the beauty industry to stop women using the simplest and most inexpensive way to remove facial hair.

Almondmum · 17/12/2023 08:13

I use the little dermablade razors on my peach fuzz..it definitely doesn't grow back any darker or thicker. It takes a while to grow back too - I only need to do it every month or so. It's very satisfying as well.

efeslight · 17/12/2023 08:20

Have done waxing for years on upper lip, chin, eyebrows, almost my whole face really.
As I have got older, my skin now reacts to the hot wax far more, and I am left with tight, red shiny skin and occasionally little blisters. So I switched to the facial blade which is so easy to use . Rarely now, I go for threading, which is much kinder to my skin.
Have the Philips lumea lazer which is great, but never been brave enough to use it on my face. Am pale with brown hair, so the lazer works well.

pickledandpuzzled · 17/12/2023 08:22

I find any tweezing leaves me with spotty bumps as the hairs regrow.
The cream needs to stay on so long it burns my skin.

So shaving it is. I have big standard bic type razors, but will swap to dermaplane as they do nice things for the skin too.

trader21c · 17/12/2023 08:28

I swear by threading the results last ages and I don’t find it too painful just a bit unpleasant … but it’s over before you know it!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 17/12/2023 08:52

I know you want a home solution but I have tried everything and, for me, electrolysis is the only thing that works.

BrassOlive · 17/12/2023 08:57

I just use a depilatory cream about once every six weeks (should probably use it more but no one is going to die because I have a bit of a tash!)

Yes I use mine quite often. Love the results. I get my upper lip and eyebrows waxed every 4 weeks and have done for over 20 years.

Tessisme · 17/12/2023 09:06

I shave mine with an electric razor. It has always been something I have had to do. If shaving made your hair grow back thicker there would be no bald men😃

Luckyme2 · 17/12/2023 09:09

Dermablades are brilliant for the soft downy hair. Make up goes on so much nicer as well.

FuckityFuckBollocks · 17/12/2023 09:13

I have moved on from getting eyebrows and upper lip threaded to pretty much my full face. I do full face less often and eyebrows/lip in between

CutiePatooties · 17/12/2023 09:22

I have PCOS so have been dealing with this for too long now!

I have used veet wax face strips for years and I’ve noticed the hairs take longer to grow back now, so instead of having to deal with them every week I can go every fortnight. This is my top lip.

I have noticed I now get one on my chin and a few down my neck so I use the strips on my neck and pluck the one from my chin. Once I’ve waxed my neck and top lip, I pluck any stray hairs I can see and then use the veet sensitive dermaplaning face kit to remove fuzz from my face as I’m worried I might miss a spot.

Am I missing a picture or a link? Definitely sounds interesting, whatever it is.

wonderingwhatlifemeans · 17/12/2023 10:16

I bought a pluxy facial epilator. It works on dark and light hair. I am a wimp so it has not been a nice process but the hairs are definitely staying away for longer and as a PCOS sufferer that means it is worth it.

AuntiePushpa · 17/12/2023 10:28

One of these springy things is great. Super cheap and easy.

What do you do about facial hair?
Passingthethyme · 17/12/2023 10:30

I don't understand why people say that shaving doesn't make hairs grow back thicker. My leg hairs are now hideously thick after 35 years of shaving, they definitely weren't like that when I started. I would avoid shaving your face OP. I also now know a few old (70+) ladies who have manly moustaches and beards which I assume is a result of shaving when they were younger
