What do you do about facial hair?

I'm 38 and going though early menopause which has brought with it lots of unpleasantness, but one of the things that's really knocking my confidence is facial hair. I have developed wispy, almost white hairs on my chin, along my jawline and my upper lip. There's too many to tweeze them out individually, it's more like downy fluff than hairs you can pull out although I do seem to get the occasional long one! There's no point bleaching as the hair is already very light. I've thought about threading but it's tricky for me to get out to appointments due to my working hours and childcare. Does anyone have any at-home, DIY solutions they would be willing to share?

I don't know the answer but would like to extend some empathy (and bump for the tips). I have a full on downy beard growing on my double chin.

HotGirlInHell · 16/12/2023 16:19

Shave! Carefully and gently.

I do this, then use my Lumea to zap the roots, but that only works on dark hairs.

But shaving will be fine. Or wax? I wouldn't do that myself at home though.

WhereIsMyCupOfTea · 16/12/2023 16:20

I'm in my 60s and have to shave my moustache every so often. The other day, I was appalled to see one hair on my chin that must have been 2 inches long. 😬

Ukholidaysaregreat · 16/12/2023 16:22

I think shaving is not a good idea. What about the sensitive hair removal creams? Get rid of hair without the stubble effect.

WeRateSquirrels · 16/12/2023 16:24

I just shave it. My skin is too sensitive for creams or anything that pulls it out by the root.

As a pcos sufferer I highly recommend IPL treatments. Am about 5 weeks in and it us a lot thinner and seeks to grow back slower so think it is working!

mrsbitaly · 16/12/2023 16:27

Look up Hollywood browzer. Brilliant tool i use for my chin, moustache and face. But know that once you start this method you'll have to keep doing it unless you use a kind of laser removal.

Just googled it, looks promising but is this really any different to shaving? I have thought about shaving but scared the hair will grow back thicker and darker!

I thought IPL only worked on dark hair? Will look into it, thanks. I am ideally looking for something I can do myself at home as getting out to appointments is such a faff for various reasons.

I go to a beauty salon every 6 weeks , waxing / sugaring on top lip , chin , underarm ,
I tweeze the odd one I see in between visits
Have never found a DIY version that’s as efficient

Leafysuburb · 16/12/2023 16:43

I have PCOS so this has been my life since about 11. I now pluck the thick ones daily and shave the rest about once a week. The Hollywood browser is a blunt razor it just makes you feel better because it's not technically shaving. Home IPL works on the dark ones but won't work so well on the white peach fuzz.

LadyEloise1 · 16/12/2023 16:46

What's the difference between sugaring and waxing @Applerumleandcustard ?
Which is better - more long lasting
?

HotGirlInHell · 16/12/2023 16:49

Honestly the whole 'growing back' thing seems to be a myth, for me anyway.

You can get little face razors in Tesco or anywhere, but I just use a normal one and it's fine.

Sususudio · 16/12/2023 16:50

Dermablade.

PermanentTemporary · 16/12/2023 16:50

I shave once a day. My hair is darker so I use IPL too but I managed to break my Lumea and haven't got around to trying to fix it. The couple of years I used it for eliminated several patches I hated (goatee, most of my moustache) and made the rest a lot thinner. Before I had the Lumea I was shaving twice a day.

I need to check if IPL will work on dyed hair??

I know someone who swears by threading.

Shaving doesn't make it come back thicker or darker, although if the hairs are the thick, strong variety they can look thicker as the cut is blunt.

For the peach fuzz hairs, I shave using a trimmer type thingy that came with my epilator for trimming the bikini line. I hasten to add I have only ever used on my face. It's basically a small electric razor.

I pluck the thick strong ones but I don't have many of them.

Waxing and treading ..

WingBingo · 16/12/2023 17:13

Hollywood Browser!

so easy to use and very cheap.

karmakameleon · 16/12/2023 16:49

I have this but I’m sure I got it cheaper. If you get one, get the rechargeable one as the batteries in the battery version last about five minutes.

This looks really good. Does it work well on lighter hairs? So many solutions seem to only be effective for dark hair.

It pulls the hair out (so like a really efficient tweezer) so hair colour makes no difference. It sounds painful but no worse than threading.

SausageAndEggSandwich · 16/12/2023 18:03

Threading.

I get my face waxed currently but it's not so efficient at removing the peach fuzz. I've recently moved so I'm still figuring out a new salon. It's an acceptable finish but not 100%. It does get the moustache and the chin hairs off though.

Threading would be completely bare skin but it hurts a lot more. The lip/nose area is unbearable without painkillers.

cpphelp · 16/12/2023 18:05

I'm 38 and I wax my upper lip and chin, and lip creases.
I've had a dermaplain a few
Times which removed everything and does leave my skin looking great, but that's essentially shaving (to the untrained eye) and £65 a pop

OhWhatToCook · 16/12/2023 18:16

Oh facial hair.

If you looked at me, you’d think I was very hair free. 😝 I have very dark hair, light skin.

It’s a job that needs a lot of investment, time and money if you can, and management.

I recommend;

IPL (salon or buy a Philips Lumea) to self zap chin, upper lip, arms, under arms, bikini and legs.

In between the above I’d also get dermablade done monthly at a salon or learn to do it yourself with Korean razor blades and YouTube tutorials. This removes all peach fuzz and it doesn’t grow back thicker. This is also a really nice feeling on your face, having no hair on it.

I also use Immac on my upper lip occasionally.

Any hard wirey hairs that are too stubborn to cower before an IPL zap, are removed by an occasional electrolysis visit.

winewinewine23 · 16/12/2023 18:19

Shave. Good quality razor, I prefer men's razors as they are designed for the face and are sharp. Shaving gel / mousse, not too thick or it clogs the blade but enough of a covering to make it slide easily (hair conditioner can work well).

Hair does not grow back thicker and darker, that's a myth, what comes out of the skin can't possibly know it has been shaved and adjust its future growth. It may look different because shaving cuts it bluntly but if you shave regularly you won't see that.

Other blades are just blades by a different name and more expensive in my experience, but everyone has their own preferences and what works.
