Hello where can I buy a Christmas party dress that would look half decent on a normal sized person??

i am so frustrated. How can I tell what the dress will look like on me, a slightly overweight 5’3 woman with a section overhang, when it is modelled on a 5’11 Scandinavian goddess?

seriously. I don’t have time for the real life shops.

I just need dresses for the average sized (or slightly larger than average sized in weight but less than average in height) person 😭

Next is popular for people your height and size

They have lots to choose from

You need to be prepared to buy loads and send stuff back. Pick a shop with a good returns policy.

Can you start with the basic shape of a dress you've loved and has suited you in the past.

Tu Petite have some nice dresses

I like quiz, I got a velvet wrap dress three years ago and bring it out every year. Get loads of compliments on it

squeekychicken · 07/12/2023 08:42

I'm a little shorter than you and have bought some nice ones from H&M recently.

whyamiawakestill · 07/12/2023 08:45

Hush works for our shape, their sizing comes up large and have some dresses.

H&M,Zara browse John Lewis as you can choose from lots of brands and styles and just do one big return to a Waitrose etc.

Just stay away from reiss that's designed for 5'11 goddesses.

The secret to looking amazing is UNDERGARMENT. Supporting undergarments esp. support knickers. A good fitting brassier.

AwkwardAnnie · 09/12/2023 09:13

Popsy. They have actual customers of all shapes and sizes modelling dresses. And they do alterations. I think there's a small charge to cover postage if you buy it and return it to be altered but once you know what you need and request alterations when you purchase them they're free.
You can ask for dresses to be shortened, arms shortened, belt tags removed, they even put holes in pockets for people to thread medical devices through.

What are your best features, OP? delicate wrists, delectable ankles, green eyes, shapely bosoms? You dress to accentuate those & under-emphasise the bits you don't find flattering. Why is this rocket science nowadays.

What about these?

It depends on what you consider to be your good points 🤔
I am slightly shorter than you and approximately a UK size 10 , weigh 53 kilos .
I wouldn’t be buying things that only looked good on a Scandinavian goddess 😂
If your waist is defined then go for something to show that off , or if you don’t mind showing cleavage get a deep V neckline .
if you like your legs get one of the Simone dresses from Fatface in velvet , wear with gorgeous little ankle boots ?

LadyLapsang · 09/12/2023 10:01

L K Bennett use models of different sizes for some clothes -I would judge size 8 and size 16.

OMalleytheAlleyyCat · 09/12/2023 16:15

Are you an apple or a pear?

If you are an apple - large busted, wide waist, slimmer legs do empire line dress, above knee, heels, you can't lose.

If you're a pear - smaller busted, "hourglass" waist, large hips/bum/legs do pencil knee length skirt, blouse if you're smaller busted or slim fitting tee/tank/jumper if bigger busted and heels/ heeled boots 👍

You could try popsyclothing.co.uk there is a limited stock of Christmas stock left but a fantastic small UK business.
