Red Lipstick - what's your lip shape, overall style, and can it really look good on most people...?

I got the At Night shade in my Space NK advent. I also don't have pouty lips, and generally wear quite subtle make up.

However! I want to try it out as I love the idea of it, but I am generally someone who wears sheer lip colour, and also just uses quite simple make up. More like concealer, blusher, and possibly something on my eyelids that's more like a primer than an actual colour. I also tint my lashes and brows rather than wear mascara.

It's quite 40's looking when it's on, which is no bad thing (excluding my wardrobe.)

Is it possible to get away with a red when red is not generally your thing...?! Or will I look like a clown, or if I have dipped into my mothers make up bag...

I have soft colouring and just can't take a lot of strong make up. Definitely not red lipstick. I could wear a sheer one, but it still wouldn't be my best look.

JemimaPyjamas · 06/12/2023 14:41

I dint know if my colouring is ‘soft’ or not!

I never used to wear red, always thought I looked like a clown until I found THE red for me (bourjois if you’re interested), now I wear red most of the time, and have branched out in to different reds. I got this in the calendar too, I think it’s very wearable, with just a bit of base, blush, minimal eyeliner and mascara. I think you just have to go for it.

learieonthewildmoor · 06/12/2023 16:56

Red lipstick works with light make up. It looks good with a neutral eye. I never wore red lipstick when I was younger, now I love it. I don’t wear heavy make up and wear red a lot now.
Sheer it out or blot it until you get used to a bold lip.
I have ordered this red - Original Sin

It’s coming tomorrow and I am very excited.

I feel encouraged, thank you! I wouldn't pair it with anything to 'done' anyway, but I wore it today on a very casual pub visit and didn't feel too weird (after two drinks anyway!)

I have acne and think red lipstick makes it look worse. I think it does require a fairly immaculate base, a la 1940s.

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 06/12/2023 18:46

I love my Chanel 146 Blast which is moisturising, not matte.
It's got loads of pigment so a few dabs go a long way.
I wear a little light base, no eye make-up. Have pale skin, dark hair and brows.

No, the immaculate base look is dated.

You need as light coverage as possible, just tinted moisturiser because you definitely don't want to look done and trying too hard in daytime.

Acne will look worse with red lipstick because of the redness.

flowerchild2000 · 06/12/2023 18:49

Anyone can wear red, you just have to match the undertones to your skin. It's also a good idea to use a lipliner to keep it from bleeding, especially if you have fine lines. It makes it easier to stay in the lines too. I like clear lipliners because there won't be any chance of fading in the middle leaving a dark line around the outside. Pat Mcgrath makes a nice matte-yet-creamy lipstick and clearly notes what the undertones are.

marthalovescheese · 06/12/2023 19:08

I have soft colouring and generally wear fairly muted makeup. I'm a soft autumn.
However I do wear red lipstick. I love Clarins guava. It's a warm red and very similar to Mac See Sheer. I prefer the Clarins though. It's a moisturising lipstick.
I wear Mac face and body foundation which is very sheer, mascara and blusher. Nothing else. I feel good in it.

I suppose it needs immaculate skin then. :(

I just bought a Maybelline red lipstick, I'm white haired and olive skinned it looks great

OhpoorMe · 06/12/2023 19:15

Are there any good makeup counters to help you work out which red is best

Summerdew · 06/12/2023 19:24

@minipie you don’t need immaculate skin at all. One of the best things I find with wearing a red lipstick is that you can wear it with no other make up and it still works, it’s just about finding the one that works for you (current fave apart from the bourjois mentioned above is Lisa Eldridge velvet ribbon). I bet you look great when you find the right one.

ZenNudist · 06/12/2023 19:29

I wear red lipstick and little makeup. I'm blonde and pale with grey blue eyes. I love it.

That space NK is very berry and I like it.

Edited to say I like Dior 999 but I have many reds in all hues from blue to Berry to orangey.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 06/12/2023 19:40

No, you need a light touch.

Immaculate anything is overrated.

I'm the same colouring as you Doggymummar - which red is it?

ChequeredPastel · 06/12/2023 19:43

I find it makes my teeth look yellow? Like they normally look quite white but with red lipstick on when I smile they don’t look as good

It's called wicked, it was from Amazon actually cos of free next day delivery

pharmachameleon · 06/12/2023 19:59

@ZenNudist I think I'm the same colouring as you too but find I struggle to wear red lipstick. I googled Space NK very berry but couldn't find anything. Is that right?

WhereIsBebèsChambre · 06/12/2023 20:00

HOW do people get their red lipstick to look so good! I love this colour but feel it wouldn't ever look the same!

Interesting, I have similar colouring and Mac See Sheer is the perfect summer shade for me. It’s a coloured lipstick that’s not overwhelmingly bright but it leans a bit pinky, peach on me. If recently started wearing Mac Business Casual as it’s a nude red version of See Sheer. It’s also really comfortable to wear. What’s the Clarins lipstick like on the lips?

Couldn't agree more! Bare face* with bright lips is the most common look I see on women of all ages, from spotty teens to liver-spotted octogenarians. All pull it off wonderfully so I think it's a case of getting used to seeing yourself in the look. A sheer or blotted down stain can be a good way to ease into it if you want to. I like Lisa E. Palazzo for a soft, approachable red that can be sheered out easily, it's neutral so works for most skintones.

*or maybe a slick of mascara and bit of brow filling but nothing visibly makeuppy

WonkyFeelings · 06/12/2023 20:29

I love red lipstick but as the owner of the Driest Lips In The World, I find I can only wear it for a couple of hours, after which it just looks like cement on my lips.

Titsywoo · 06/12/2023 20:41

I can't wear lipstick at all. I have quite full lips but it just looks odd on me. Everyone says I'm wrong and gives me one to try then says "oh yeah, you're right" when I put it on Grin

Tinted lipgloss is all I can do and I think in red that always looks a bit odd.
